Division 3 Team Of The Week: 1st Edition - Sand Creek

SAND CREEK - It has been domination for Sand Creek so far this season en route to an unbeaten beginning to the year and with it the honor of being named Prep Baseball Division 3 Team of the Week.

“We are off to a pretty good start,” related head coach Wayne Perry, whose Aggies took a 7-0 record into play this week following three run-rule wins, 11-1 (five innings) and 16-1 (three innings) over Athens and 16-6 (six innings) over Swanton last week. “Offensively we have scored over 10 runs a game the past seven games (including the current week) and we’re averaging over 12 runs a game.”

Ivan Wilkinson was 2-2 with two RBIs and three runs scored in the first game versus Athens and Reid Hulett was 2-2 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs and two runs scored in the second contest. Jacob Schamberger was 3-4 and drove in four runs against Swanton while Wilkinson was 2-3 with a double, three RBIs and scored three times.

Wilkinson, the fourth-ranked sophomore outfielder in Michigan, is hitting a team-high .609 with one home run and 16 RBIs, while Schamberger has a .583 average with 15 RBIs. Carson Preston is batting .455 to go with a team-best 17 RBIs.

Jordan Illenden, Jacob Schamberger and Ivan Wilkinson are all 2-0 on the mound for Sand Creek, the 12th-ranked team in Michigan in Division 3. Illenden tossed a one-hitter versus Athens, Schamberger allowed one run on two hits in three innings against Swanton and Wilkinson picked up the save.

“The keys to our success is if we keep throwing strikes and keep swinging the bats like we are,” explained Perry, whose squad has continued to pound opponents with 20-1 and 11-2 victories over Springport this week to make it nine straight wins on the campaign. “If we do that we should be competitive.”
