Prep Baseball Report

2024 Overall Rankings - Oregon & Washington

Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

Earlier today, Prep Baseball Report released the initial Top 200 Overall Rankings for 2024

The list is compromised of prospects from all over the country based on evaluations from our national scouts as well as individual state directors.

With this class being so young, it will be updated and expanded several times before these rising freshman move on to the next level.

Since its inception in 2005, the Prep Baseball Report has evolved into one of the country’s biggest and most respected independent scouting services, with a singular focus of providing comprehensive year-round coverage in every state we are in. The mission of the Prep Baseball Report is to scout and promote amateur baseball - high school, junior college and college - and, ultimately, help athletes achieve their dreams of playing baseball at the next level.

With more than 150 scouts, we have the largest baseball scouting infrastructure across all levels of amateur baseball in the country. Our multimedia platforms and events work in tandem, ultimately creating the most powerful source of high school baseball promotion in each state.  While other organizations take a national approach, our goal is to become the authoritative voice on the ground level of each state.

At the state level, Oregon and Washington had 4 total players land in the Top 200. With each state contributing 2 prospects. As we continue to provide more coverage and run more events in the Pacific Northwest, we fully expect more of the local talent to assert themselves on the national scene.

Oregon Prospects

Ryan VandenBrink C / 3B / West Linn, OR / 2024

Impressive build at 5-foot-11, 195 pounds with advanced strength throughout his frame. Offensively, hits from balanced, square set-up with some bend in his lower half. Hands stay back with a deep load as he begins a controlled forward stride into his hitting base. Creates bat speed with quick, powerful hands and easy hip rotation. Holds posture through contact. Presently generates more line-drive contact but expect him to lift the ball more consistently as he gets more seasoning. Behind the dish, he possesses a strong glove hand and has shown some aptitude with his receiving skills while handling high level arms in bullpen settings. Hips sink low in his set-up as he keeps upright posture with his torso. Uses a quick exchange out of his crouch into a high, compact arm action. Ball shows consistent carry out of hand with reliable accuracy. Oregon State commit

Gabe Howard RHP / OF / West Linn, OR / 2024

6-foot-2, 175 pounds with a wiry, athletic build and frame that can carry more weight. At the plate, starts tall, with a narrow base and some weight pre-shifted onto his backside. Uses a slow, deliberate shift back while stretching hands back with a short scap load. Lower half goes back into toe tap, then takes a forward stride to gain additional ground. Barrel works through the zone with controlled intent. Finishes high through contact and stays tall in lower half, which should help lead to additional power down the road. Defensively, moves well in the OF with long, rangy strides. Maintains body control while moving laterally to the ball. Flashed solid footwork and actions when attacking grounders down on the grass. Transitions into a clean exchange with a step-behind shuffle to get more momentum behind the throw. Long, continuous arm path with a high ¾ release and accurate ball flight. On the mound, has an impressive combination of current stuff while still offering exciting projection for the future. Has a high leg lift with a slight coil into his back hip. Creates some shoulder tilt at hand break and sinks into his rear leg before beginning his move down the slope. Front side opens up and allows him to create considerable torque through his core. Lands with clean direction towards target. Arm path shows extension early but avoids wrapping or getting long in the back. High ¾ release with a loose, whippy finish. Shows aptitude for creating tight spin early on and should develop a quality arsenal. Oregon commit

Washington prospects

LANE SIMONSEN

C / RHP / LYNDEN, WA / 2024

Lean, projectable athlete with a highly projectable 6-foot-2, 165 pound frame. Offensively he shows easy bat speed with some feel for the barrel and a consistent approach. Sets up with a narrow base and loose, relaxed hands. Uses a knee-knock leg kick to shift weight into back hip. Hands stay low and back just below rear shoulder. Barrel works easily into contact with a high, lofted finish. Stays tall and rotates against a firm, posted front side to give additional leverage. Will likely be a threat for consistent gap-to-gap power with a strong hit tool. At catcher, showed a compact, one knee set-up flashing some mobility in his lower half. Switched to a staggered set-up with his lower half on throws down to 2nd. Simple transition out of crouch into throwing motion. Releases from a tight ¾ slot with clean arm action. Bounces around the diamond and has also showed well at SS. Skill-set could translate to OF if needed as well. On the mound pitches with a mechanically sound, balanced delivery while keeping a compact arm stroke. Stays tall at leg lift with a slight drift forward down the slope. Separates hands and creates slight uphill angle with shoulders while getting some bend on his backside. Has some length in his stride. Gets consistent extension with his torso over front side while keeping eyes on target. Stays behind the ball with an aggressive release. Possesses feel for a CB and CH as well. Has the look of a polished strike thrower. 2020 Junior Futures Game participant. Washington commit

KAILAND HALSTEAD

C / 3B / PUYALLUP, WA / 2024

Strong, sturdy frame with power levers at 5-foot-10, 185 pounds. Sets up with upright, narrow posture in the box and front foot slightly open. Uses a low forward stride to get into a wider hitting base. Controlled landing with weight centered and hands in a strong, loaded position. Shows a quick, direct path to the ball with powerful hands/wrists at the point of contact. Keeps barrel tight to body & showed the ability to consistently backspin and lift balls to his pull-side. Advanced strength helps him keep everything quiet while holding balance/posture thru finish. Behind the plate, shows an impressive feel for catching. Confident receiver with a soft glove hand. Used a one-knee down set-up while keeping torso tall. When throwing down to 2nd, switched to a crouched position with a compact target. Easy, fluid transition into throwing motion. Short, tight arm action with a high ¾ release. Consistent, accurate ball flight to the bag. Also showed well at 3B, flashing solid footwork and easy arm strength. Stays low while funneling ball in and kept some momentum going while coming thru on the play. On the mound, pitched with a deliberate, controlled delivery and repeatable actions. Stays tall in his lower half with minimal bend/sink as he takes forward stride. Front foot gets down quietly and allows him to accelerate his arm with late intent. Gets exception extension over his front leg with his forward trunk tilt. Keeps eyes on target with a balanced finished after release. Clean, compact arm action with a easy hand speed.
