Paul Panaccione
Arizona Scouting Director

PBR Arizona has been hosting events, scouting games, and gathering info from coaches as we approached this day so we could guarantee you our best effort while covering the high school season. Each week, the P25 rankings will be updated, along with: team notes, and Game of the Week coverage.

If you have any info worth sharing, please keep PBR Arizona Staff updated with video/comments. The more information we can collect from different sources the better. We are always open to your opinions and appreciate any feedback.

WEEK 1: TOP 25

Week 1 has come to a close, and it was an action packed week! Competition was stiff state-wide, as we saw some upsets, great pitching matchups, walk-off wins, and much more. But with a few games in the books, we now have a better idea of how this season may play out. We have updated the P25 rankings, and added some teams on the bubble who have been showing they should not go unnoticed.

Team Notes

#1 Hamilton (3-0)

The number #1 team in Arizona started the season as we expected. And we can't ignore the opponents they went through to remain at a perfect record. Hamilton recorded wins against Corona Del Sol, Red Mountain, and Sandra Day O'Connor. Allowing only 1 run to both Corona and O'Connor, Hamilton showed that their pitching staff has enough fire power to get through tough offenses no matter who is on the mound. The matchup vs Red Mountain was an exciting one, as it resulted in a 5-4 extra inning walk-off via pass ball. They have beaten high level arms, and shut down high level offenses. This is a complete team with prospects all over the diamond, and they are no doubt in the drivers seat for the time being.

Runs allowed: 6

Runs scored: 29

#2 Red Mountain (2-1)

Red Mountain, although they took an early loss from Hamilton, remains in the #2 spot in Arizona. Like Hamilton, this is a deep team both on the mound and offensively, and they showed through week 1 it has what it takes to beat the top teams. Red Mountain grinded out a victory in their opener against Dillion Orr and Shadow Ridge, then came back in game 2 and dropped a heart breaker to Hamilton. This team has three legitimate starting pitchers, and an offense that will provide ample run support. As the spring continues, look for Red Mountain to remain towards the top of this list.

Runs allowed: 8

Runs scored: 12

#3 Mountain Ridge (1-0-1)

Mountain Ridge is a team full of hard nosed baseball players, that play together, and are skilled with athleticism. They'll get help from prospects across all classes on the mound and offensively. The Mountain Lions are in good hands defensively all around the diamond, especially in the infield. They have 3 high level shortstops playing on the dirt for them, along with outfielders that can go get it. Offensively, they will be tough outs at the plate, with the ability to leave the yard up and down the lineup. The one question about Mountain Ridge is, will they have enough on the mound? We will see as the season plays out, as we have high expectations for this group.

Runs allowed: 5

Runs scored: 10

#10 Basha (3-0)

The Bears are hot! The Basha Bears following week 1, have moved into the top 10. Cruising through their preseason tournament games, and rolling into the spring with a perfect 3-0 record. They have beaten some solid opponents, but the meat of their schedule is yet to come. A good test for them is coming this week, as they will hit the road and take on the Casteel Colts. This is a very balanced team, that is expected to play clean baseball, with competitive at bats, and some arms to hold down offenses. And we expect this group to get better as the season moves along. The ace of the staff is Dallin Harrison, and soon they will add LHP Bradyn Barnes to the rotation, once his transfer probation is lifted. Basha is an exciting team that we expect to keep making noise in 2022.

Runs allowed: 8

Runs scored: 21

#18 Corona Del Sol (0-3)

The Aztecs are not off to the start that they had hoped for, but we believe it is much too early to write them off. This is a skilled group and hard working coaching staff, that we expect to put a halt to an early season skid and get back on track. Corona is currently down two of their biggest arms, that they expect to return soon. Taking losses to three tough opponents in: Hamilton, Mountain View, and Mountain Ridge. #1 Hamilton took it to them in the opener, they lost a heart breaker to Mountain View, and fell to #3 Mountain Ridge in game 3. Their bats have been slow to start, but we know there is thunder in that lineup that we're waiting on seeing. We still have high hopes for this Corona team, pending the health of their pitching staff.

Runs allowed: 22

Runs scored: 4

#22 Perry (3-0)

The Perry Puma's were at the top of our list for preseason "On The Bubble" teams, and they've shown thus far they belong off that bubble. They took care of business in their preseason tournament, and came out of the gates hot with 3 wins to start the season. With commanding wins over Skyline, Sandra Day O'Connor, and Pinnacle, Perry moves into the #22 spot on our list. This is a team in a tough region, with some talented opponents, and no matter the outcome of those games, Perry could roll into the post season battled tested with a chip on their shoulder. This is going to be an exciting group to follow as we move forward, and have shown they're a team that deserves to be talked about.

Runs allowed: 5

Runs scored: 28

Notre Dame (2-0)

Notre Dame Prep has made some noise in week 1, topping the defending 4A State Champs Mesquite, and St Mary's. They're off to a perfect start in the 2022 season, including 3 wins in preseason play against three ranked opponents, making that 4 preseason ranked opponents they've knocked off. This group has come out of the gates hot, as they look to remain perfect this week, taking on Thunderbird and Walden Grove.

Runs allowed: 7

Runs scored: 14

Alhambra (2-0)

Alhambra is the defending 6A State Runner-Up, and are off to another good start in 2022. They're showing they're a talented group, even without Ace pitcher Daniel Avitia. Avitia took the mound for them in all their big matchups last year, and losing him is a big hit to any roster, but this group is moving along fine without him. Their record remains perfect, including 4 preseason tournament play wins, and they're doing it on both sides of the ball.

Runs allowed: 2

Runs scored: 29
