16U Ontario Blue Jays Travers vs. 16U Toronto Mets Blue

AURORA – The CPBL tournament kicked off on Thursday in Aurora at Stewart Burnett Park as the 16U OBJ Travers took on the 16U Mets Blue team in a ball game that was all Blue Birds right from the get-go. Behind seven solid, shutout innings from right-hander Kennedy Strong, the OBJ Travers took down the Mets 13-0.

Allowing only 2 hits in his seven innings of work, Strong was backed by an offence that exploded in the fourth inning for seven runs and did not look back. Led by a very impressive top of the line up consisting of Cooper Davis, Ty Small, and Noah Naylor, the OBJ Travers took advantage of some sloppy Mets pitching and defense.

Small had himself a game going 4-for-4 with a walk and RBIs while Naylor and Davis reached base of a combined total of six times for the game.

The OBJ Travers offence did not end there as in the fifth, Ryan Johnston added to the onslaught with a two-run homer to push the Jays up 12-0. The OBJ squad would add one more run that same inning to start off the tournament with a nice win.

PERFORMERS OF THE GAME:

Kennedy Strong (OBJ): 7 IP, 2 hits allowed, 0 R

Ty Small (OBJ): 4-for-4 (2 Doubles), 1 BB, 2 RBIs

Ryan Johnston (OBJ) 2-for-3 (1 Home Run), 1 BB, 2 RBIs

16U Nationals White vs. 16U Fieldhouse

AURORA – On Thursday afternoon, the 16U Nationals White took on the 16U Fieldhouse squad in a game that was much more contested than the one seen on the same field earlier in the day. In a game that started off as a pitcher’s duel between two bright, young righties, Austin Young and Cam Arnold, the Nats would pull away late to pick up a thrilling 6-1 win.

Young, in particular, shined on Thursday afternoon. The 6’2’’ right-hander tossed 6 shut-out innings, striking out 7 while allowing only one hit in the process. With a quick delivery, the hard thrower has sharp bite on his curveball and displayed the ability to overpower opposing hitters.

Offensively, the Nats could not get to Arnold until the 4th inning, when Brady St. Denis hit a sac grounder to cash in the game’s first run. The Nats would add one more run and the game would stay at 2-0 until top of the 7th where the Nats put the game out of reach. Behind an RBI single from both Ethan Baptie and Jacob Parsons, the Nationals went ahead 6-0 to ice the ball game.

The Fieldhouse Pirates would get on the board in the bottom half of the 7th, but it was not enough as the Pirates fell to the Nationals White, 6-1.

PERFORMERS OF THE GAME:

Austin Young (NAT): 6 IP, 7 Ks, 0 R, 1 Hit Allowed

Jacob Hawkins (NAT): 2-for-4, 1 R

Cam Arnold (FH): 7 IP, 5 ER
