The Freshman Free Showcase was held on Saturday, January 27th at the Virginia Sports complex. Athletes in the 2021 and 2022 class came to perform in front of the PBR scouting staff. Our Rapid Reaction takes a look at nine of the top performances from the event.

 

Griffin Stieg RHP / OF / McLean, VA / 2022 Scouting Report: 6-foot-1, 165-pound physical athletic frame for age. Hits from a balanced set up at the plate, short path at the plate with hands inside ball and uphill finish. Creates good bat speed at the plate and shows strength with exit velocity of 85 mph. Athletic with a shorter arm action from the outfield with active feet throws were up to 80 mph. Ran a 7.12 60-yard dash. Showed two way potential with fastball up to 80 mph. Austin Younce C / OF / Greenbrier Christian, VA / 2021 Scouting Report: An athletic 6-foot, 165-pound frame. Fluid actions around the field and a 2021 to follow. Athletic set up at the plate with a short simple load and slight sink into his legs. Free hands at the plate with a direct path and uphill finish. Gets lower half involvement with backside intent. Barrelled the ball well during his BP session. Gap-to-gap approach and shows power potential. Exit velocity was best of the event at 86 mph. Primary catcher, showed a quick exchange behind the dish with quick feet and proper footwork. Throws were accurate to the bag at 76 mph and pop as low as 1.98. Athletic enough to play outfield as well, 83 mph velocity from outfield. Ran a 7.23 60-yard dash. SNEAK PEEK

 

Kyle Edwards SS / 2B / Salem (Va Beach), VA / 2021 Scouting Report: Projectable 5-foot-9, 136-pound frame with room to add on. Athletic set up with a short rock back load into slight arm bar. Digs in at the plate and aggressive. Shows quick hands with a shorter path and fluidity in swing and some barrel whip through zone. 78 mph exit velocity and more there as he adds to frame. Athletic actions in the infield, soft hands and clean exchange with ability to throw from multiple angles. 76 mph position velocity. 7.50 60-yard dash, should get better statistically across the board as he continues to mature.   SNEAK PEEK

 

Joshua (JT) Carter C / 1B / Bishop O'Connell, VA / 2021 Scouting Report: A physical 5-foot-11, 192-pound frame. Strength is present at the plate, hitting from an athletic setup. Has a rock back load with bigger leg kick. Takes a direct path at the plate with some extension through contact. Creates quick bat speed at the plate and pull side power is present. Exit velocity of 84 mph. Sound exchange behind the plate with clean footwork and exchange. throws have life from behind the plate at 76 mph. with a pop time low of 2.06. Ran a 7.67 60-yard dash.  SNEAK PEEK

 

James McGrady SS / 2B / Greenbrier Christian , VA / 2021 Scouting Report: Athletic 5-foot-10, 155-pound foot frame. Hits from an athletic set up with compact and controlled load. Short path at the plate, keeping hands inside the baseball. Quick hands with uphill finish and some bat speed. Barrelled well during BP. Exit velocity of 78 mph. Sound actions during infield workout. Showed a strong arm that should continue to get better with 81 mph velocity.  SNEAK PEEK

 

Garrett Pancione C / OF / Highland, VA / 2021 Scouting Report: Compact and solid 5-foot-9, 160-pound frame. Hits from a wider, athletic set up. Quick load to hitting position with some rhythm throughout. Stays inside the baseball with extension through contact. Can get longer at times. 81 mph exit velocity. Has a clean exchange behind the plate with pop time at low as 2.06. Position velocity of 69 mph. SNEAK PEEK

 

Johnny Oates C / 3B / Thomas Dale, VA / 2021 Scouting Report: Athletic 5-foot-11, 175-pound frame with room to add strength. Hits from a balanced set up at the plate. Short simple load with slight arm bar. hands worked well a tthe plate with a level path and some bat speed. Consistently barrelled the ball during his BP session. Room for more popwer with gap-to-gap style. Exit velo of 81 mph. Solid footwork and exchange from behind the plate. Was able to get rid of the ball consistently and show some arm strength at 75 mph. Could clean up a small amount and see his pop lower. 2.16 best pop. SNEAK PEEK

 

Aidan Brown OF / C / Staunton River, VA / 2021 Scouting Report: A strong 5-foot-8, 160-pound frame. Hits from an athletic st up with high hands. Short load back with leg lift. Shorter uphill path at the plate. Shows some bat speed, gets around ball at times. Showed some lower half involvement. Exit velocity of 77 mph. Clean actions in the outfield. Throws showed average carry on them with a position velo of 78 mph. SNEAK PEEK

 

Ryan Peterson C / 1B / First Colonial, VA / 2021 Scouting Report: Projectable and athletic 5-foot-11, 175-pound frame. Hits from a taller slgihtly open set up with arm bar. Shows good bat speed at the plate with a barrel that stays in the zone. Whips bat through. Gets some extension through contact with uphill finish and lower half involvement. 85 mph exit velocity. Projects well on the offensive end. Sound exchange from behind the plate on throw downs. 2.32 pop, room to improve there on the defensive end.  SNEAK PEEK
