Future Games Trials: Statistical Analysis

TJ Hunt
Director, PBR New Jersey

On Sunday February 16th, the PBR New Jersey team made the trip up to Flanders, NJ to Centercourt Club and Sports to host the PBR NJ 2020 Future Games Trials. This is annually one of the biggest events on the calendar, and year in and year out, one of the first sneak peeks of the top underclassmen in the state. Over 100 prospects met us there, representing every high school level.

In the post below, we're taking a look at the day's leaderboards. We're picking apart the data we measured in Flanders on Sunday and compiling notable details for you to see. Keep an eye out in the coming weeks when we publish videos into player profiles and begin to roll out our position-by-position analysis. But for now, here's a look at the more statistical side of things.

Uncommitted 2022 RHP Zach Stichweh (Seton Hall Prep HS, NJ) was the day's top fastball velocity, at 90 mph. Stichweh solidified himself as one of the top 2022s in the state with his performance on Sunday, and will be a hot commidity to watch for this spring and early summer. Uncommitted 2023 RHP Griffin Seibel (Glen Ridge HS, NJ) topped at 86 mph. Athletic looking 6-foot 160-pounds, Seibel throws from a high-3/4 slot and shows an easy, repeatable arm action. We've known about 2022 RHP Ryan Weingartner (St. Augustin Prep HS, NJ) for a while now, but he continues to show why he's one of the top two-way talent in the current sophomore class. Wiry, athletic build - Weingartner's arm has some explosiveness to it, topping at 86 mph as well. Finally, a new face on the landscape comes from 2022 RHP John Cerwinski (Seton Hall Prep HS, NJ). Cerwinski has a projectable 6-foot-2 175-pound frame with long limbs for plenty of room to fill out. Certainly a name for college coaches to highlight.

10 Jarrett Pokrovsky NJ Schalick 2022 3B 7.11

Twitchy uncommitted 2022 SS Ryan Taylor (St. Augustine Prep HS, NJ) topped the list, running a blazing 6.62 60. We liked his all around game at this event, showing loose, whippy pop from the right side at the plate, and actions that play up at shortstop as well. Duke recruit, 2024 Ut. Andre Modugno came in as the second-best 60-time with a 6.83. Modugno, still in 8th grade, was among the top statistical performers at every position he participated in, and rightfully so. The 6-foot-4, 200-pounder has some explosiveness. 2022 OF Cooper Athey (West Windsor South HS, NJ) rounded out the top three runners at the event with a 6.86, followed by Weingartner (6.87) and 2019 Future Gamer, '22 OF Ben Romano (The Hun School) at 6.93.

Finally, noteworthy INF Lorenzo Meola (Watchung Hills HS, NJ) was a standout at the plate with a projectable 5-foot-10 150-pound frame. He topped his exit velo at 90 mph. Weingartner topped the list of infielders with 89 mph across the diamond, while Modugno was just a tick under at 88 mph. Infield standout '22 SS Josiah Brown (Delbarton HS, NJ) topped at 86 mph. I really liked Brown's versatility in the field and overall feel for the position at shortstop. Smooth, easy footwork and quick hand exchange. At the plate, a switch hitter with easy pop. 2022 SS Dominic Patrizi (Cherokee HS, NJ) topped at 85 mph. There's some bounce to his step in the infield and the ball has some carry to 1B on finish. Tied with Patrizi was 2022 INF Nick Sulpizio (Bishop Eustace Prep HS, NJ) at 85 mph.

Leading the way in this category was again, the Duke recruit Modugno at 89 mph while recent Rutgers recruit, '22 Xavier Massey (Audubon HS, NJ) at 87 mph. '23 Alex Kranzler (Old Tappan HS, NJ) is a name to follow. He topped at 85 mph from the OF, but he can do it all, on the mound and at the plate. Krazler has a physical 6-foot-2 190-pound frame with some projectability. There were three players that topped at 84 mph - '22s Ben Romano and Walter Schwartz (St. Joseph's Metuchen HS, NJ) and '23 Matt Augustin (Bishop Eustace HS, NJ)

8 CJ Orrego NJ Wayne Hills 2023 C 65
9 Matthew Muller NJ St. Peter's Prep 2022 C 64

Hernandez led all catchers at the event with 78 mph down to 2B. I still think Hernandez can be a corner infield type - still raw behind the plate but the arm strength at power in the batter's box are prevalent. 2022 Sebastian Pisacreta (Bishop Eustace Prep HS, NJ) was equally as good on the mound as he was behind the plate and with his hitting as well. Well rounded player with a high ceiling as a two-way prospect. 2023 C Mark Gialluisi (St. Joseph's Metuchen HS, NJ) will be one of, if not the top catching prospect in the 2023 class after his performance this weekend. Explosive out of the shoot, Gialluisi's footwork and catch-to-throw transition were among the quickest we've seen for a player his age.

2022 C Andrew Lombardi (Middletown North HS, NJ) had by far the best day of the catchers. Advanced catch and throw ability and power at the plate. Our National Crosschecker Shooter Hunt took notice in his article earlier today. Lombardi is one of the top uncommitted backstops in the state. 2022 Joe Cilea (Colts Neck HS, NJ) is a name to know. Showed some explosiveness behind the plate and in the box; still has plenty to grow into his frame.
