Athens Wood Bat Showcase Quick Hits:

A perfect day on the diamond at Athens High School on Wednesday, June 12. The event was originally planned for Monday, June 10 but the forecast forced the event to be pushed back 2 days. This did not dampen the athletic ability of the 54 players that went through the workout. There were some impressive numbers and performances put up by many of the players. Over the next week we will be rolling out a ton of content from the event, including a scout analysis by position on each player present. For today. let’s take a quick look at some of the standouts. Obviously there were several other players that stood out at the event but here are just a few:

Chandler Brewer (2021, OF/1B, Hazel Green) Physical player that showed a nice approach at the plate with some juice in the middle of the field. The arm showed nice actions from the OF with consistent throws to the plate.

Austin Brewer (2020, C/OF, Gadsden City) Strong built player with some thunder in the hands (92 mph exit velo) and a simple approach at the plate. Athletic catcher with a very quick transfer that showed well on throws to 2B (low 2.0 pop times)

Barrett Brown (2022, RHP/OF, East Limestone) Solid makeup on this ’22 grad that shows a well rounded game. Ran a sub 7.0 60 yard dash and the ball really came out of his hand well in the OF. At the plate he did a nice job using his lower half which created some juice to the pull side.

Reis Browning (2020, RHP/OF, East Limestone) Athletic actions to go along with a tall, slender build and can easily add some muscle. His throws from the OF really stayed on plane with legit accuracy and he showed feel for the position. Short, compact approach at the plate that showed a middle of the field approach.

Carson Daniel (2020, 1B/ RHP, Brooks) Showed solid feel around the bag at 1B and did a nice job picking balls on throws in the dirt. Good athlete that ran a sub 7.0 60 yard dash with solid actions all day. Nice barrel path at the plate and showed a solid line drive approach.

Stuart Edge (2020, RHP/OF, Bob Jones) A ton to like in this ’20 grad. Does a nice job using his core strength at the plate and showed major pop to the middle of the field. One of the more impressive rounds of BP on the day. Powerful stroke but the swing stays short. Plenty of arm strength from the OF as well (86 mph).

Dillon Acosta (2020, OF/2B, James Clemens) Solid, fundamental player that has a strong build. Showed a nice arm in the OF but the throws were very accurate throughout his defensive workout. There is some definite strength in the swing and he does a nice job of getting his hands back to launch position. Nice barrel control throughout the swing.

JW Hopkins (2022, 3B/RHP, Bob Jones) Triple digit exit velocity reading for this ’22 (102 mph!!). That carried over to his round of BP as he showed major pull side juice, leaving the yard several times with a leg kick approach. The power plays.

Colby Hutto (2021, 2B/RHP, West Morgan) Solid makeup on this ’21 grad that does a ton well. Sub 7.0 60 yard dash guy that shows legit actions with the glove. Has grown since we last saw him and gotten stronger. Really showed some juice to all fields during his round of BP.

Caleb Johnson (2022, SS/RHP, Central Phenix City) Maybe no one was more impressive with the glove than this switch hitting SS. Loved how he carried himself and his feet matched the glovework. Quick transfer and the arm showed nice accuracy. Simple approach at the plate from both sides that looks like a prototypical 2 hole type hitter (showed the ability to spray the ball all over the field).

Dylan Johnston (2020, C/RHP, Athens) Really stood out behind the plate as he transfer was about as quick as we have seen. The arm strength matches the transfer which resulted in the lowest pop time at the event (1.87). Showed an improved approach at the plate than when we saw him last as he really created some juice and did a very nice staying through the hitting zone. Like this ’20 grad!!

Avery Seaton (20221, OF/RHP, Madison Academy) Another guy that can do a lt of things well on the field but the bat is definitely the player here. Low 90’s exit vel off the tee and a simple approach at the plate that resulted in continuous line drives to the backside gap. Did a nice job staying through the zone. Nice actions in the OF and an event best 87 mph velo from the grass. Nice carry on his accurate throws.

Tucker Stockman (2022, C/RHP, Athens) Physical, young backstop that did not disappoint. Showed nice catch and throw skills with a nice transfer and arm strength to the bag to go along with nice flexibility in the hips. Had some tilt in his swing and showed big time juice to the pull side. The swing is compact and the barrel stayed inside the ball well throughout. A ’22 to follow.

Lawson Stricklin (2022, C/ 3B, Decatur) Another impressive young catching prospect at the event. Athletic setup behind the plate with arm strength to match. Threw consistent mid to upper 2.0’s on the bag and looked advanced blocking balls in the dirt. He showed a pull side line drive approach during BP and the swing was synched up.

Carson Villalta (2020, SS/3B, Brooks) Really like this player and the left handed bat plays well. The 4A hitter of the year showed the ability to consistently drive the ball in the pull side gap. The swing had some tilt in it and he did a nice job staying through contact. The bat really plays on this ’20 grad.

Alex Wade (2022, OF/ RHP, Madison Academy) One of the more impressive players at the event who is truly a high ceiling type of guy. Long, lean build with the ability to add plenty of weight and strength over the next few years. All of the tools are there. He turned in a sub 7.0 60 yard dash, was mid 80’s with the arm from the OF (and accurate) and the exit velocity was 93 mph off the tee. A ton to like in this ’22 OF.

Parker Willoughby (2020, OF/LHP, Athens) Solid player that showed solid feel in the OF and did a nice job with the transfer in the OF. Solidly built with some athletic actions but we really liked him at the plate as the bat really works. Did a nice job of staying synched with his lower half which created some power off of the bat. The swing stayed short which continually resulted in solid line drives in the pull side gap. The finish through the swing was impressive as well.

Check back tomorrow as we will take a look at the statistical leaders of the individual testing stations from the event. This includes a 104 mph exit velocity reading off of the tee!!!!!!
