Last Week Rewind: Valhalla vs Briarcliff Recap

Valhalla 6, Briarcliff 5

Twice last week Briarcliff had a lead over Valhalla going into the final inning, and twice the Vikings rallied for a dramatic comeback. After senior Conor Sullivan hit a pinch-hit, walk-off homer with two outs in the seventh on Wednesday to breakup Cameron Johnson’s bid for a no-hitter, Valhalla did it again on Friday. Briarcliff had a 5-2 lead heading into the final frame, but a few clutch hits and a costly error led to another Vikings’ comeback. Junior first baseman Brett Holtz had the big blow, a two-out, two-run double off of the right-center field wall to put Valhalla on top 6-5.

Senior right-hander Jason Wolfthal pitched six innings for the win, allowing two earned runs on six hits and four walks with seven strikeouts on 116 pitches (68 strikes). James Harnedy got the save while Christian Lovecchio and Gavin Astrella also had run-scoring hits.

Briarcliff right-hander Joe Canonaco took the loss, allowing three earned runs over 6 2/3 innings on five hits and five walks with six strikeouts. Holtz’s double came on Canonaco’s 127th pitch.

Valhalla and Briarcliff are considered to be two of the best Class B teams in Section 1. Valhalla is now 6-1, while Briarcliff dropped to 4-2.
