Prep Baseball Report's MN Unsigned Senior Showcase took place on Sunday, August 21, 2016. The event was held at the University of Northwestern-St. Paul in St. Paul, MN. The event featured prospects from Minnesota, Wisconsin, South & North Dakota from the 2017 class who showcased their talents in front of our scouting staff and multiple colleges in attendance. Thank you to the players, parents, my staff and UNW-St. Paul Head Coach Dave Hieb for such a great event.

There were a number of great individual performances this year at the MN Unsigned Senior Showcase; we have broken down the individual statistics below.

As we drill down into the statistics:

+ 11 players ran sub-7.2 60's.
+ 19 players recorded 84+ mph exit velocities
+ 9 players recorded 78+ mph infield throws
+ 12 players recorded 78+ mph outfield throws
+ 9 catchers recorded 70+ mph throws to second base
+ 3 catchers recorded sub-2.1 pop times
+ 26 pitchers were 80+ mph on the mound

Below we have highlighted the prospects at their respective positions with evaluations; listed alphabetically.

CATCHING EVALUATIONS

Elliott Engen, C, White Bear Lake, 2017
6-foot, 178-pound switch-hitting catcher. 7.46 runner. Shows solid pop in bat from both sides of plate with gap to gap approach. Consistent hard contact with line drives off bat. Uncontrolled lower half with negative weight effecting balance. 87 mph exit velocity. Flexible lower half, avg. direction working through batters box, clean exchange, slight hitch in arm action, longer release, accurate to bag, 2.13-2.25 pop times with 74 mph arm strength. Good mobility behind plate, sticks pitches in zone, quick to block, keeps balls in front.

Spencer Graves, C, Holy Angels, 2017
6-foot, 180-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 7.77 runner. Open stance, leg kick and shoulder load to swing, works middle of field, line drive and ground ball contact, 85 mph exit velocity. Inconsistent footwork and direction, opens front side early, quicker release, avg. carry and accuracy to bag, 2.15-2.31 pop times with 73 mph arm strength. Good set-up, looks comfortable behind plate, sways with pitch well, avg. receiver, needs to improve sticking pitches in zone.

Patrick Kennedy, C, Hill Murray, 2017
5-foot-10, 183-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 7.82 runner. Crouched stance with slight body load and front heel turn trigger. Shows strength in swing with above avg. pop. Mid/pull approach with hard top spin contact off bat, 76 mph exit velocity.

Alex Logelin, C, Waconia, 2017
6-foot, 182-pound right-handed hitting catcher. #64 ranked player in MN 2017 class. Strong athletic build. 7.19 runner. Quiet rhythm in box with slight body load, easy swing, solid extension through contact, mid/pull approach with consistent solid contact, 84 mph exit velocity. Clean exchange with simple footwork, tall stance at release, solid carry and accuracy on throws, 74 mph arm strength with 2.21-2.37 pop times. Strong hands with ability to stick pitches, good mobility and sway, needs to improve blocking quickness, comfortable behind plate. Has athleticism and moves well enough to have options in college- playing catcher and outfield as well.

Jake McCabe, C, St. Peter, 2017
5-foot-8, 155-pound right-handed hitting catcher. Smaller compact build. 7.39 runner. Choppy rhythm in load and swing, inconsistent contact during BP, mid/away approach with ground ball contact, 80 mph exit velocity. Flexible lower half, good direction with feet, down and around with exchange creating length, throws short to bag, 2.25-2.34 pop times with 71 mph arm strength. Narrow setup and stance behind plate, stabs at pitches occasionally, shows quickness, needs to receive additional instruction and reps.

Jonathan Olson, 3B/C, Coon Rapids, 2017
5-foot-10, 150-pound right-handed hitting infielder and catcher. 7.19 runner. Easy load, shows rhythm and clean bat path, consistent solid contact, mid/pull approach producing line drives and ground balls, 81 mph exit velocity. Good direction and momentum through plate, stays down and through on release, clean exchange with quick release, 73 mph arm strength with 2.2-2.34 pop times. Above avg. blocker, is quick behind plate, smooth actions, shows ability to receive to both sides of plate.

Nick Onomiya, C, Cretin-Derham Hall, 2017
6-foot, 190-pound right-handed hitting catcher. #48 ranked player in MN 2017 class. Strong mature build. 7.6 runner. Open stance with leg kick trigger, good weight transfer through contact, shows hard line drive contact to middle of field, has extension through contact with above avg. pop in bat, 82 mph exit velocity. Above avg. quickness with exchange and release, out front losing lower half power on throws, 73 mph arm strength with 2.09-2.28 pop times. Showed ability to block, quiet receiver with strength, has mobility, and comfortable easy actions behind the plate.

Brock Russell, C, Tartan, 2017
6-foot, 185-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 7.9 runner. Square stance, hitch in load, minimal use of lower half, stiff plane through contact, line drive and ground ball contact, shows ability to drive baseball to oppo gap, 81 mph exit velocity. Aggressive catch and throw, works through plate, length to exchange, lower arm slot on release effects accuracy and carry, 71 mph arm strength with 2.06-2.33 pop times. Tall setup behind plate, restricts mobility and balance, solid receiver with strength, raw mechanically.

Julien Shadle, C, St. Louis Park, 2017
5-foot-10, 270-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 8.72 runner. Square stance with body load, uphill swing plane, works middle of field, underneath at contact, flashes above avg. pop in bat, 81 mph exit velocity. Quicker feet, long exchange, accurate to bag, needs to improve arm strength. 65 mph arm strength with 2.5-2.64 pop times. Solid mobility and flexibility for size, has ability to receive, deadens ball and keeps blocks in front.

Benjamin Weaver, C, Bismarck Century (ND), 2017
5-foot-11, 165-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 7.13 runner. Compact swing, drops hands in load, flat swing plane through zone, Flashes hard line drive and fly ball contact, 78 mph exit velocity. Clean exchange with quick release, accurate to bag, 75 mph arm strength with 2.00-2.14 pop times. Easy calm actions behind plate, above avg. receiver to both sides of plate, solid blocker with soft body keeping balls in front.

Christopher Webber, C/RHP, Southland, 2017
6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.78 runner. Square stance, body load, simple line drive swing plane, some stiffness in lower half, ground ball contact, mid/pull approach, 82 mph exit velocity. Rocker step into throw, long exchange, stands up losing lower half momentum, lower release slot on throws, 75 mph arm strength with 2.15-2.25 pop times. Tall setup, high glove presentation, stabs at ball receiving.

Trevor Weidt, C, St. Francis, 2017
5-foot-10, 170-pound right-handed hitting catcher. #92 ranked player in MN 2017 class. Working way back from minor lower back issues. 8.02 runner. Slightly open stance, body load, strides to square, good rhythm and uses hands in swing, easy clean bat path, consistent solid contact, line drive gap to gap approach, 80 mph exit velocity. Light on his feet, quick exchange, some hitch in arm action with longer release, 68 mph arm strength with 2.16-2.33 pop times. Is flexible behind plate, solid receiver, works balls back to middle of plate.
