Midwest Fall Championships: Sunday Notebook

PBR Staff

The 2019 PBR Midwest Fall Championships took place at Grand Park in Westfield, IN. Here are the highlights from Sunday’s action.

CHAMPIONSHIPS

+ The Cangelosi Sparks, the 18U Champions, were hands down the most dominant team on the weekend. The Sparks outscored opponents 57-5 in five games, with their toughest game coming in the championship against Chicago Scouts Association. The Sparks ultimately prevailed by a score of 4-3.

+ In the 17U division, the Iowa Sticks got out to an early lead and stifled a late rally, beating the Nebraska Prospects 6-4.

+ In an exciting, back-and-forth affair, the Hitters beat the Indiana Bulls 7-6 to win the 16U division.

2020

+ Miles Halligan (Hopkins HS, MN) is a hulking 6-foot-1, 190-pound prospect who plays with physicality from both the right-handed batter’s box and the mound. Still uncommitted as the No. 9 prospect in Minnesota’s 2020 class, Halligan took the bump on Sunday for the Mariners Midwest Scout Team against a talented Chicago Scouts Association lineup. He creates easy downhill tilt with his heavy fastball released from an over-the-top arm slot, which sat 86-88 mph in his first couple frames of work. Halligan also utilizes a couple different breaking balls, a curveball and slider, both of which he has a feel to spin. His over-the-top slot helps generate hard downer action on his 12/6 curve, 70-71 mph. His slider also flashes sharp, late break 77-78 mph.

+ Ernie Day (Taft HS, IL, 2020) a Michigan State commit, started on the mound in the morning game for North Stars. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound, broad-shouldered, senior worked worked three hitless innings. Day has a clean arm stroke and was pitching with minimal effort at 85-86 mph, touching 87. Day also showed off a big-bending, 11/5 curveball, that he was landing for strikes and also expanding with two strikes.
