NCTB Fall Classic: Day 2 Quick Hits

The event draws many top players from Northern California to participate on their travel teams along with two NCTB teams comprised of participating players assigned to a team. Players from all four current grad classes are present.
Below are some notes on players who caught our scouts eyes on day two. Players are listed in no particular order, teams are listed alphabetically.
Aldrete Baseball
2019 LHP Hunter Hanes (Pacific Grove HS) - Long and lean lefty worked up to 85 with angle from high release point. CB showed big depth with 12/6 action from top of zone. Quick work in 1st inning with 3Ks
California Bulldogs
2020 MIF Armis Morris (Westmont HS) banged three balls today and each one was better and louder than the last. He is a compactly built infielder, with strength throughout. His swing is quick, direct and physical. He’s got compact power hitting ability and that is not common. He runs well and has good baserunning instincts. In the field, 2nd base looks to be his future spot due to raw arm strength but his hands are good and his release is good and he can play defense.
CBA Sacramento 2019/2020
2020 C Landon Wallace (Roseville HS) - Long double into LCF that was loud off the bat then barreled a single through the ⅚ hole. Showed off the arm with back-picks to 1st and 2nd and strong glove with quick movements back into zone for pitcher. Nevada commit.
2020 OF Cameron Walty (Consumnes Oaks HS) - Swung the bat well with barreled ball off wall in LF and liner right at RF. Arm showed well in OF and can track the ball to his glove side.
CBA Sacramento 2021/2022
2022 SS/C Colton Farr (JMF School) makes the list for second day in a row. Continues to show high level defensive skills both at SS and behind the plate. Block and recover both good, athleticism plays for him. Tossed a warm up 2.12 on the bag. Plays SS on the move, footwork on feeds to 2nd base was textbook and feeds accurate. Ended game going to his right and making long throw to get the runner. Verbal skills and teammate-ness continued to shine.
2022 3B/C Damien Martinez (Antelope HS) makes another appearance in the list, this time with some solid line drive contact. Was more on time today with the bat, getting hands to a good spot and allowing barrel to get through contact. Liked some of what he did behind plate but blocking is something to work on, as is receiving. Footwork on throws is good, though can be more direct in line to 2nd base by replacing feet better.
Chico Aces Navy
2021 Anson Aroz (Placer HS) is a player with a multitude of talents, skills, and intangibles. See him as a SS and he’s got the tools and instincts for that position. See him as a catcher and well, you’d never want to see him as a SS because he’s that good behind the plate. Switch-hitter with bat speed and good hitting mechanics, he has a lot to offer. First one on and off the field, top step of the dugout type kid, and instincts/anticipation galore.
2019 LHP Chase Rossman (Foothill HS) is a 6-foot-0 left-hander who hasn’t had much time on the mound in recent seasons and maybe until today didn’t think of himself as a pitcher, but with the ease he got to 86-87 mph and with the life on his change-up, and just enough feel of a curveball, today was a good day for him.
Chico Aces Red
2020 RHP Cooper Thacker (Pleasant Valley HS) - very projectable and loose arm from long, very lean frame. FB up to 80 but with good angle. Flashed an Above Average CHG that was very heavy off the FB path with very good feel going back to back and putting it on both sides of the plate.
Central Valley Elite
2022 LHP Devon Daniel (Kerman HS) was fun to watch. He’s a lithe LISTED 5-foot-10 left-hander with feel for the craft of pitching and he will have stuff to match that feel in the future. As it is now, he was 74-76 and pitched DEEP into the game, maybe into the 6th and kept his velocity. Given his frame and size, that velocity was impressive. The life on the fast ball was good to the arm side and he shoved it inside to right-handed hitters with no fear. His big 1/7 curveball is sharp, steep, and has depth due to tight spin. His moxie and tenacity and guts all matched his ability to pitch.
Club All Star
2020 RHP Jonathan Sarmiento (Kimball HS) - Body to be a workhorse pitcher. FB 86-88 T89 with life through the zone. Hard SLD with some 2-level break. 4Ks in 3IP. St. Mary’s commit.
Dub Dynasty Black:
2019 SS Brady Miguel (San Benito HS) - barreled two balls into LF driving in 1 run. Defensively will end up at 2B but showed clean MIF actions and solid footwork.
2019 RHP Matt Campo (San Benito HS) - went 5 innings working 3 pitch mix against very strong lineup. CB had late bite and buckled some hitters for K looking.
Dub Dynasty Blue
2021 LF P.J. Kissee (Live Oak HS) put the barrel to the ball twice again today, it’s an attribute that has shown up two days in a row, and also in the BP round. He’s best on balls middle away when he can get extended but in his zone there is damage to be done. Runs pretty well for a big strong young man, though baserunning is something to work on.
2022 MIF Zachary Lewis (Pacific Grove HS) was a standout at SS today, repeatedly showing soft hands and a loose accurate arm, with throws that tracked well. He has a good release and exchange out of the glove though his timing of hands and feet working together on throws can improve. Showed feel for the glove both on ground balls and around the bag on short hops. Offensively he has ability to use the whole field. Would be served best with a line drive spray approach, as he can get too big at times.
EJ Baseball Warriors
2020 C Nick Poss (Liberty HS) - on base 4 times and crushed a ball into LCF for standup triple. Showed off athleticism with three Stolen Bases. 2.0-2.1 pops in between with ball on the bag from good arm. Strong catching skills behind the plate as well. USF commit.
Lodi Reds
2020 RHP Angelo Zazzarino (Lodi HS) got some attention when he was on the mound, where his fastball was up to 86 mph, steadily 83-86 in the wind-up, while dropping a tick to 81-83 in the stretch. He’s not quite polished yet and is a bit of a thrower vs being a pitcher at this time, but he is certainly a name to be aware of and see how that arm strength evolves. He’s a well-put-together 6-foot-0.
Mavericks
2020 C Omar Plascencia (Lodi HS) - showed pull power from Testing Day was for real with very long HR and 2B that was hit off LF wall. 2nd game barreled line drive over 2B head. Athletic blocking skills and 2.1 pop on in game caught stealing.
2021 RHP Fidel Ulloa (Lodi HS) - 3 strong innings with 6 Ks moving FB around the zone and showing a pitch that was rarely straight. Stayed off barrels, pounded the zone and attacked. In 2nd game, showed gamespeed instincts at SS with ability to come attack ball and showed base running skills that aren’t seen in many sophomores.NCTB Navy
2020 OF Michael Mugan (Monterey HS) - 2B down RF line then stole 3B on next pitch with LHH and Catcher didn’t have a chance. Speed plays in CF showing range to both sides and ability to close quickly.
2021 1B Blake Burke (De La Salle HS) - Crushed a ball off top of RF wall in Minor League stadium. Played quality first showing some athleticism on diving play and glove flip to pitcher covering on in-betweener play.
2021 SS Ryan Werner (St. Mary’s HS) - showed a compact swing with quick hands turning around velo back at Pitcher and then through the ⅚ hole later in game. Defensively was in right spot at right time showing baseball knowledge with loose actions in MIF.
2022 LHP Jaron Nevarez (San Ramon Valley HS) - very projectable LHP with high ceiling. Worked mainly FB/SLD flashing a CHG later in outing. FB 80-82 T83 showing late run and moved pitch to every quadrant. Real feel for SLD that was late, tight and short.
2020 RHP Jake Buxton (Tamalpais HS) - Projectable RHP with loose arm. Ran FB 85-86 T87. Showed feel for a CHG and SLD. CHG had run under RHH hands and SLD was tight with late action using to both sides of the plate.
NCTB Scarlet
2021 RHP Jake Sapien (Buhach Colony HS) is one of the harder throwing sophomores in the state and he’s not thrown a pitch in his sophomore season yet. The arm is fast and strong and up to 89 mph in warm-ups, 88 mph in game action. Yet, his best pitches came in situations when he needed to locate and/or hold a runner and he was calm and smooth at 85-86 mph and got sink and life. He can throw hard, but he also has the ability to dial it down and pitch. The curveball is a slow 67-70 mph two plane breaker at it’s best. The change-up is a work in progress.
2021 1B Brewster Mott (Vacaville HS) is a physical right-handed hitter who has not lacked for power potential or bat speed. Today’s game showed that all of his potential and talents are coming together as usable talent. He banged a shot off the left field wall that rocketed off his bat like a shot out of a cannon. His swings were on balance and with intent and with two strikes he made adjustments to put a ball in play. He is scratching the surface of BIG power. Defensively he made a nice pick of a short hop on a scud thrown from 3rd base.
2022 C Malcolm Moore (C.K. McClatchy HS) is a left-handed hitting catcher with size and physicality that belies his age. He blocked well, he has a strong arm, he received hard throwing Sapien quite well on pitches in the zone and competed to corral some wild misses. Offensively he hits from a wide open stance and is on the plate, with hands that work and he good hands, though the set-up doesn’t seem to complement his tools.
West Coast Premier
2021 C John Sheehan (Cosumnes Oaks HS) stood out with high level defensive talents yesterday and again, with a different scout seeing him, the arm strength once again was on display. He is a long and lean catcher and as he ages and physically matures, that arm will keep getting stronger. His offensive game is coming along nicely as well.
