NCTB Fall Classic: Testing Quick Hits

PBR California Staff

The second annual NCTB Fall Classic Powered by Prep Baseball Report California got underway this morning with the testing session that saw players go through a pro-style workout with 60 yard dash, defensive work, and batting practice. The 16 team tournament will run through Sunday.

The event draws many top players from Northern California to participate on their travel teams along with two NCTB teams comprised of participating players assigned to a team.

Below are some notes on the testing session standouts. Note, not every player participated in the testing session as it is not mandatory for participants. Players are listed in no particular order.

2019 OF Ronny Belton (Jerry Manuel Foundation School) put on a display of raw power and athleticism during the testing session. After running a 7.1 laser timed 60, Belton showed off his huge arm in the outfield. Registering a 92 mph position velocity, Belton's throws were all on the bag at third and on a line. In BP he two out while peppering the left-center-field wall a couple times. He showed a gap-to-gap approach with excellent feel for the barrel with a best 90 mph exit velocity.

2020 3B/RHP Josh Hardimon (Jerry Manuel Foundation School) showed big power in the bat during BP where his middle-middle approach resulted in line drives to all fields with power. Registered exit velocities in the 85-88 mph range. Showed good range to both sides with a strong, accurate arm across the diamond.

2021 RHP/INF Jake Sapien (Buhach Colony) looks, carries himself, and does all the things like a ball player with plus athleticism. Clocked a 7.65 laser timed 60 before showing a strong, accurate arm that registered 88 mph on the infield. Shows the ability to make throws from multiple angles. At the plate he flashes big, raw power to all fields. Hit a couple out during BP while drilling line drives to all fields.

2021 RHP/C Dominic Rodriguez (Turlock HS) has the tools of a future Division I college baseball player. He's big, athletic, and nimble showing above average range to both sides with quick, clean hands. Registered a 79 mph position velocity with accuracy. At the plate he hammered balls to the gaps with some power maintaining a middle-middle approach throughout. Showed good feel for the barrel that he keeps in the zone a long time.

2021 RHP/OF Malcolm Hsu (St. Francis) showed sneaky power with excellent barrel feel and control through the hitting zone. Pounded balls to left-center field consistently and hit one out to left. In the outfield he showed average footwork and an average arm with accuracy. Arm action is clean and projects well when his body fills out.

2021 INF Elvin Delic (Consumes Oaks HS) showed to be a highly athletic middle infielder with soft, fast hands and an above average arm. Registered an 86 mph position velocity with throws that were accurate from multiple angles. Quick, smooth footwork allowed him to beat the ball to the spot on a few occasions. Showed some power at the plate with a homerun off the hitting tunnels beyond left-center-field. Projectable athlete on the infield.

2021 INF Felix Bravo (Hanford HS) was an electric infielder during the workout showing range, speed, and above average defensive tools. Plays with high energy - a bounce in his step - and light on his feet, Bravo showed above average range to both sides and excellent body control when attacking balls. Arm is a tick above average with an 81 mph infield velo and inconsistent accuracy. At the plate he shows wiry strength with sneaky power to the gaps. A line-drive hitter, Bravo maintained a consistent middle-left approach using his fast, strong hands to get the barrel to-and-through the ball.

2020 OF Tyler Keenan (Monte Vista Christian HS) is a guy college coaches are going to want to see in a hurry. At 6'2" and approximately 200 pounds, Keenan showed some power to the pull side with present bat speed and control of the barrel. Ran a 7.01 60 yard dash. Showed excellent footwork and soft hands in the outfield where his big arm (86 mph) was accurate on all throws. It was one of the best outfield arms we saw during the entire testing session.

2019 RHP/1B Aiden Lee (Monte Vista Christian HS) is an arm that college coaches are already familiar with but it was his power at the plate that was on display during the testing session. Showing a gap-to-gap approach, Lee went off the wall a few times and over it a couple. The power is easy and projectable. Most colleges recruiting are on him for his pitching which he'll do late this weekend.

2020 3B Roberto Nunez (Monte Vista Christian HS) showed to be a smooth fielder with plus actions. Rangy to both sides, Nunez is quicker-than-fast and shows an accurate arm across the diamond at 78 mph. At the plate an inconsistent barrel plane caused a few pop ups, but when everything was in sync he showed his power to gaps. There's way more in there too.

2021 OF PJ Kissee (Live Oak HS) is a big strong dude with some present power at the plate. The 6-foot-2 righty shows a balanced setup with quick hands allowing him to get the barrel through the zone on a consistent plane. His feel for the barrel and present power showed as he wore out the left-center-field gap before going over the fence a couple times. In the outfield his actions are clean and smooth and his arm is accurate. He registered a 78 mph exit velocity.

2020 C Omar Plascencia (Lodi HS) showed very well all-around during the testing. The 6-foot backstop has a strong, durable frame with significant strength in the lower half. With pop-times in the 1.96-2.01 range, Plascencia's mechanics behind the plate are quiet, his hands are soft and his arm big. At the plate he left the yard a couple times on a line showing off his present power. Showed good feel for the barrel and a line drive approach.

2019 OF Hunter Hanes (Pleasant Grove HS) was arguably the best bat we saw during batting practice. Hanes shows easy power to the pull side where he left the yard three times. The power really project for continued development to all fields from his middle-middle approach. In the outfield Hanes showed off a strong, accurate arm with throws in the 86-87 mph range. Shows athletic movements when tracking balls and excellent body control when arriving to them.
