NORTHERN NEVADA PROSPECT ID - INFIELDERS ANALYSIS

Buddy Gouldsmith
Nevada Scouting Director

+ Calvin Bailey (Bishop Manogue, 2019) Lean, 5-10, 145, Bailey has room to add needed weight and strength.  A solid athlete, he showed well at all three spots, infield, outfield and behind the plate.  He is better suited for extended time in the infield, but his versatility is documented.  Taking groundballs at short, Bailey displays most comfortable actions with easy rhythm. The actions and arm lend presently to second base, but growth and development make him serviceable at all three spots.  He sets up at the plate, wide, semi bow-legged with good balance.  Load is simple and small with a line drive approach.  The swing is handsy with quickness, solid plane and a fluid follow through.

+ Patrick Barry (Reno High, 2020) High wasted, 5-8, 120, Barry has an athletic frame with plenty of room to grow. He is a long projection, yet capable infielder with solid mechanics. Patrick’s size and strength presently lend him to second or third base, but increases will provide velocity and carry to his throws, allowing him to possibly play shortstop down the line.  He has a solid feel for his capabilities using a quick release and right-over-left footwork to propel his throws across the diamond.  At the plate, he maintains a balanced setup and a succinct rhythmic load.  He uses a line drive, middle of the field approach and creates consistent quality contact. Patrick’s swing has a touch of natural loft which will play to gap power with maturity and physical development.  Overall weight and strength gains will have a huge impact on his game.

+ Erich Brilliant (Bishop Manogue, 2021) Compact, 5-9, 150, Brilliant has a wide and stocky frame with signs of present strength.  In the field, footspeed and actions lend more to corner infield and catcher.  He is noticeably more comfortable in a reaction position over the rhythm and footwork required when ranging for groundballs.  He has a short tight arm circle from a high ¾ slot and developing carry from the middle of the infield.  He stands in the box with a balanced, strong setup, knees over ankles.  He possesses a rigid, strength over bat speed swing which is in and out of the zone quickly. Hitability will be enhanced with a more level path and a higher level of fluidity.

+ Mason DaForno (Reno, 2022) Proportional, 5-7, 145, Mason has a maturing, evenly distributed athletic small frame with slightly sloped shoulders. He displays signs of current strength.  He has a solid feel for rhythm and footwork on balls to his right and left as well as slow rollers.  Mason threw from a high ¾ arm slot, possessing enough strength and carry to play second and third base. He made on target throws.  At the plate, he showed a balanced setup, loading to a lower off-right chest hand position quickly.  He has a closed stride muscling his swing which was short on the backside as well as short on the front side, limiting extension.  He looks to pull and ball flight is effected by limited extension.

+ Samuel Fierstein (Reno, 2021) Large Frame, 6-2, 160, Fierstein has wide shoulders that parallel his lower half.  He has developing strength with methodical movements.  He is a deliberate fielder with a low ¾ arm angle that results in push throws, limiting carry and velocity.  Physical strength increases will be pertinent to accommodate his strength over speed inclination to the game. Fierstein’s stance is narrow, striding to a point of good balance with weight transfer to a flexed front leg. He maintains a learned rhythm in his load that results in a solid bat path, finishing below his lead shoulder. His swing mechanics are very controlled and lead to consistent contact.  A first baseman, Fierstein could see improved power in less control and more explosiveness to his approach.

+ Cade Grogan (Reno, 2019) Strong, 5-foot-10, 160, Grogan has an athletic build with wider, sloped shoulders that taper to a smaller waist.  He displays developed core strength which provides controlled movements.  He is a sure handed infielder with good rhythm and footwork.  Grogan utilizes a consistent shuffle that propels carry on his throws when time permits. He shows a feel for touch throws from multiple arm angles. At the plate, Grogan maintains a balanced setup with a low hand starting point, raising them back and up almost to shoulder height. He strides closed and stays behind the ball at impact, providing strength to his barrel. Grogan utilizes middle of the field approach, hitting the ball where it is pitched and displaying gap power.

+ Garrett Hires (Bishop Manogue, 2019) Lanky, 6-2, 170, Hires has wide square shoulders in a larger frame.  His frame will hold additional weight, profiling him at a corner, outfield or infield position.  He is a comfortable and capable corner outfielder with confident glove skills on groundballs as well as fly balls.  He throws with effort and strength, providing carry out of a ¾ to lower arm angle.  His footwork and rhythm on throws are playable with relative accuracy.  In the infield, the length of his actions require time which is better suited to a corner.  He can throw from multiple angles with serviceable arm strength provided time permits. Reaction positions, first and third base lend better to his talents. In the box, he employs a wide stance with a smooth easy load. Hires strides early to a stiff front leg, leaving him disconnected and him shouldering his naturally lofted swing.

+ Mason Oliphant (Reno, 2022) Developing, 5-8, 115, Oliphant has a sleek frame, built for speed.  Maturity will bring size and strength increases that will benefit his already sound game. He is a fearless infielder with smooth easy actions, often throwing from a low ¾ slot.   The slot plays for his rhythm and footwork lead to a quick exchange.   He possesses a noticeable self-awareness for his present capabilities but they do not limit his game. At the plate, his simple load and stride accompanied by his level bat plane produce consistent quality contact. He is a youthful athlete that has a bright future, given size and strength increases.

+ Mason Rowe (Reno, 2022) Slender, 5-10, 145, Rowe has a projectable frame. He displays confident and capable infield actions. Just returning from an arm recovery program, he employed a quick exchange from a low ¾ arm angle. He maintains first step quickness, showing agility in his lateral movement and playing balls with urgency.  Rowe demonstrated a feel for touch throws, while ranging left and right as well as slow rollers. He possess the skill set to be a stay at home shortstop down the line.  At the plate, he is aggressive with primarily a hand load, striding to a flat foot with good separation. He has good feel for the barrel and has a solid combination of bat speed and strength which leads to quality contact.

+ Coleman Schmidt (Reno, 2020) Strong, 6-1, 175 pound frame.  Schmidt looks the part with an athletic, tapered build. He has room to add weight and strength. He displayed tremendous athleticism at shortstop ranging right and left. He showed the actions and arm strength to stay at shortstop, with a feel for touch throws.  He demonstrated a good arm, planting and throwing from the six hole.  Schmidt has a simple approach at the plate with minimal hand movement and small stride.   He made consistent hard contact with a short stroke.  He possesses sneaky power with good bat speed and short follow through.  Schmidt maintains smooth easy strides and runs well. Schmidt will be an excellent pickup and his utility could prove a valuable asset to a D1 program.

+ Matthew Sigafoos (Damonte Ranch, 2021) Lean, 6-0, 145, Sigafoos has square shoulders on youthful undefined frame.  In the infield, he displays good actions with soft hands. Although rhythm and footwork lack first step quickness, he has plenty of arm strength to stay at shortstop. Overall abilities may lend to third base with size and strength increases.  In the box, he stands tall and balanced, striding after a bit of a leg kick with limited separation.   His lower half providing most of the load followed by a down to level path with varying one and two handed finishes. Sigafoos made consistent contact with a middle of the field approach.

+ Sam Smith (Reno, 2021) Large frame, 6-5, 185, Smith’s youthful appearance and big features indicate he is still growing.  His length provides a big target at first base, but impinges first step quickness and hip flexibility when fielding groundballs.  That being stated, Smith is a coordinated, in sync player that in time will be provided the strength and stability to be a good fielder.  He displayed instincts for the position, stretching and picking balls in the dirt.  He showed the ability to throw from different angles to second base and across the diamond, doing so accurately.  At the plate, he is imposing. He stands tall, with hands just below rear shoulder.  He employs a lower half load, minimizing hand movement and striding closed, with limited separation.  In spite of lack of separation, he has quick hands and maintains leverage power.  He made consistent hard contact.  Smith could be a high profile arm in the future.

+ Jack Weise (Bishop Manogue, 2020) Projectable, 6-0, 150, Weise is long legged with slightly sloped shoulders and room to add weight and strength. Weise has solid footwork and exchange as well as a feel for touch throws on the run. He currently uses a shuffle to provide carry on longer throws. He showed the ability to throw from multiple arm angles. Core strength will stabilize movements and promote arm strength.   At the plate, Weise sets up tall, with busy hands and employing a significant leg kick.  Upon foot plant, he achieves good separation. His long levers lend a manageable length to his swing.  He maintains balance throughout an aggressive swing and two-handed finish, hitting against a firm front side.  He possesses a timing rhythm that provides consistent quality contact. Weise’s swing lends to projectable power with physical gains.
