NORTHERN NEVADA PROSPECT ID - QUICK HITS

Buddy Gouldsmith
Nevada Scouting Director

RENO, NV – This past Sunday, Northern Nevada welcomed great weather for their inaugural Prospect ID workout at Reno High School. PBR Nevada’s first event hosted almost 30 players from the valley.  Players from all high school classes participated and here is a brief look at what we saw.

+ CF Paul Vossen (Bishop Manogue, 2019) Small frame, 5-foot-7, 150. Vossen is high-waisted with wiry strength.  With a 6.49 60 yd dash, he possesses a present plus tool.  In the outfield, he plays confidently, getting to the ball quickly, breaking down and throwing the ball with effort, creating strength and carry in his throws.  He throws from a high ¾ arm angle true and accurately.  At the plate, he stands tall with still hands, striding to a flat front foot. He displays a twitchy, top hand driven swing that makes the ball jump off his bat. His contact produces hard line drives and hard ground balls.  He relies heavily on bat speed which occasionally provides sneaky pull side power. Vossen is a prototypical top of the lineup type player with a crude athleticism to his game that lends to a greater ceiling.  This is a great addition for a program at any level looking for a hard-nosed player and a need for speed.

+ SS Coleman Schmidt (Reno, 2020) Strong, 6-foot-1, 180 pound frame.  Schmidt looks the part with an athletic, tapered build. He has room to add weight and strength. He displayed tremendous athleticism at shortstop ranging right and left. He showed the actions and arm strength to stay at home shortstop, with a feel for touch throws as well as planting and throwing from the six hole.  Schmidt has a simple approach at the plate with minimal hand movement and small stride.   He hits against a firmly flexed front side. He made consistent hard contact with a short stroke and touch of loft. He possesses sneaky power with good bat speed and a short follow through.  Additional size and strength gains may move him to third base. Schmidt, uncommitted, will be an excellent pickup and his athleticism will prove a valuable asset to a D1 program.

+ OF John Kane (Reno, 2019) Strong, 6-foot-0, 185. Kane has an athletic, frame with present strength. With developed forearms and core, he shows a good combination of strength and speed. He runs well for his size and better underway.  Defensively, Kane profiles as a corner outfielder.  Pure arm strength lends more to left field; however footwork and exchange efficiency allow his arm strength to play up.  He is a true and accurate thrower who utilizes a long hop when the situation dictates.  At the plate, Kane has a balanced setup with a subtle, rhythmic load.  His relatively short levers promote a short swing with just the right amount of lift.  His middle of the field approach creates consistent hard contact. He has an aggressive swing with bat speed. He profiles as a corner outfielder with projectable power even though his orientation is to hit for average.  Kane is currently uncommitted but will be a nice pickup for someone in need of a left-handed bat.

+ IF/C/OF Calvin Bailey (Bishop Manogue, 2019) Lean, 5-foot-10, 145, Bailey has room to add needed weight and strength.  A solid athlete, he showed well at all three spots, infield, outfield and behind the plate.  He is better suited for extended time in the infield, but his versatility is documented.  In the outfield he showed solid actions with enough arm to play a corner.  Both is arm strength and carry will be enhanced with footwork efficiency.  Taking groundballs at short, Bailey displays most comfortable actions with easy rhythm. The actions and arm lend presently to second base, but growth and development make him serviceable at all three spots.  Behind the plate, he relies heavily on a quick exchange, and accuracy.  He is a solid receiver with soft hands, block and recovery skills would need to improve for a long term stay.  He sets up at the plate, wide, semi bow-legged with good balance.  Load is simple and small with a line drive approach.  The swing is handsy with quickness, solid plane and a fluid follow through. The versatile and uncommitted Bailey will be a welcomed addition to a program looking to improve their depth.
