Northern Indiana Winter Preview: Outfield Analysis

On Saturday, January 3rd, PBR Indiana hosted the Northern Indiana Winter Preview Showcase at Hobart High School  in Hobart, Indiana.  A total of 28 players participated in the event, with the majority coming from the northern part of the state.  Below we take a look at the outfielders that participated in the event.  

Top Ranked Outfielders 

2016's

1. Jacob Dickson, OF, Portage HS, 2016: 6-foot-3, 220 pound possesses a strong, athletic frame.  Actions are a little raw, but possesses tons of projectability.  Uses a long arm action from the outfield and was 81 mph.  Average hands with above average footwork.  Plays through the ball with some athleticism.  Ran a 7.33-60 at the event.  At the plate possesses tons of bat speed with barrel whip.  Registered an event best exit velo of 100 mph.  Starts balanced with a smooth load.  Stride is short with an explosive lower half.  Good approach, gets to extension.  Present pull-side power.  

2. Lukas Jaksich, OF, Andrean HS, 2016: 6-foot-1, 160 pound left-handed outfielder showcased a strong arm with carry and accuracy from the outfield at 86 mph.  Showcased fluid footwork with average hands.  Needs to improve foot speed in order to stay in the outfield, ran a 7.82-60 at the event.  Offensively, the LHH hits from an athletic setup with a smooth load.  Stride is short with excellent balance throughout.  Possesses good bat speed with a short, level path to the ball.  Barrelled up every ball, hard contact, line drive hitter with potential gap power.  Registered an exit velo of 84 mph.

2017's

1. Matt Olovich, OF/SS/RHP, Guerin Catholic HS, 2017
: 5-foot-9, 167 pounds,  possesses a strong, accurate arm from the outfield at 87 mph.  High energy player, plays through the baseball well.  Above average glove with quick, fluid feet.  Ran a 7.36-60 at the event.  Offensively, hits from an athletic setup.  Loads back.  Stride is short with good balance throughout.  Shows some bat speed with an uphill path to the baseball.  Showcased the ability to drive the baseball to the opposite field.  Overall fluid rhythm.  Registered an exit velo of 82 mph.   

2018's 

1. Clay Thompson, OF, Andrean HS, 2018: 5-foot-9, 140 pound left handed outfielder possesses good athleticism.  Long arm action from the outfield with accuracy at 78 mph.  Average hands with fluid feet.  Clean exchange and plays through the baseball with athleticism.  Ran a 7.33-60 at the event.  Offensively, the LHH starts from a tall, narrow set up.  Smooth load with a short stride.  Uses a leg kick.  Good balance.  Bat speed is average.  Short, level path to the baseball with fluid rhythm.  Line drive hitter.  Registered an exit velo of 71 mph.  Young, 2018 with projectablity.  Good follow in the 2018 class.  

Best of the Rest (Listed Alphabetically)

Alex Batistatos, OF, Hobart HS, 2016: 6-foot-1, 175 pounder possesses an athletic frame.  Was 82 mph from the outfield using a long, loose arm action.  Average hands with fluid feet.  Needs to quicken up the exchange.  Ran a 7.32-60 at the event.  At the plate is an aggressive hitter.  Starts from an athletic setup.  Tendency to drop the hands during the load.  Stride is short with average balance throughout his swing.  Bat speed is average.  When getting to extension shows some gap potential.  Registered an exit velo of 84 mph.  

Michael Lakomek, OF, Portage HS, 2017: 5-foot-9, 125 pounder ran a 7.13-60 at the event.  Shows some athleticism.  Uses a long arm action and ¾ slot from the outfield where he was 73 mph.  Average arm strength.  Moves well and plays through the baseball with a clean exchange.  At the plate starts in a wide stance.  Arm bar during the load.  Short stride with average balance.  Bat speed is average with a long path to the baseball.  Opposite field/slap type hitter.  Registered an exit velo of 75 mph.  

Lucas Schultz, OF, Valparaiso HS, 2017: 6-foot-1, 160 pound outfielder possesses long limbs and was 66 mph from the outfield using a short arm action.  Defensively shows raw actions.  At the plate hits from a slight crouch.  Loads back with good balance throughout the swing.  Stride is short. Hands drop during the load.  Average bat speed with a long path to the baseball.  Line drive hitter.  Registered an exit velo of 75 mph.  

Lucas Watts, OF, Hobart HS, 2016: 5-foot-8, 200 pounder was 74 from the outfield, using a short arm action.  Ran a 8.16-60 at the event.  Offensively the LHH  hits out of a slight crouch position.  Starts with a high back elbow.  Hands drop during the load.  Short stride with good use of the lower half.  Possesses average bat speed with a short path to the ball. Registered an exit velo of 79 mph.   Aggressive approach.
