Northern Nevada Pre Season ID - Outfield Analysis

Buddy Gouldsmith
Nevada Scouting Director

SPARKS, NV - The athleticism of the small outfield group at the Northern Nevada Pre Season ID event was impressive.  Three uncommitted seniors displayed talents that will certainly prove valuable for institutions at the next level. Each participant with room to grow and develop while providing a strong desire that will assist in reaching their ceiling. Below is a look at each:

2019, Aidan Elliott, OF, 6-foot, 165, (Galena). Athletically built with room to add weight and strength.  He displayed solid outfield actions with a true and accurate throwing arm.  He is a natural outfielder but his athleticism provides some low-end utility in the infield as well as on the mound. At the plate, he maintained a flat swing achieving consistent quality contact with line drives to all fields. He has good hand rhythm in a front foot approach.  Elliott’s athleticism makes him an intriguing follow as he looks to invest full time in a future in baseball.  Elliott might do well to spend a year at a junior college, giving his talents a full year of baseball to mature and develop. A four-year institution could do well to play the long game with this athlete and he will fit well for a two-year college that can develop the athleticism.

2019, Paul Vossen, OF, 5-foot-8, (Bishop Manogue). Small frame with wiry strength. Vossen posted an event best 6.54 60 yard dash.  His speed carries huge value in the outfield as he tracks the ball well, taking great pride in his ability to take away hits.  He has a twitchy swing with his hands dropping slightly into his launch position.  He strides to a heavy front foot, staying on his backside and relying heavily on his quick hands to whip the bat through the zone.  Since his last event, Vossen’s has flattened his swing. He has a lot of tools and with work and guidance has a chance to be a legitimate top of the order type bat.  His intensity and unwillingness to accept anything less than success will ultimately propel him forward and make him an attribute to any program.

2019, Calvin Bailey, OF, 5-foot-9, 150, (Bishop Manogue). Bailey has room to add weight and strength and those gains will be valuable to his future success.  A consistent performer he displays capable skills in the outfield.  There is some length in his transition to throw but he gets on top of his throws and delivers the ball accurately.  He stands confident in the box, maintaining balance throughout his swing. Bailey has a steep attack but is timely and delivers the barrel consistently.  He can use all fields. Bailey is a “must see daily” type performer whose true value is displayed the more you see him.  He has huge small college value or may look to a junior college, providing time for those needed weight and strength improvements.
