OU Commit, Adams, Lets Game ‘Speak For Itself’

MEDINA - At 5-8 and 150 pounds, Billy Adams understands getting noticed is not always easy.

“I’m not going to stand out at showcases,” Adams said. “Scouts aren’t coming up to me.

“I just let my game speak for itself on the field.”

It obviously has been heard after the Saint Ignatius junior made a recent commitment to Ohio University.

“I started talking to them about three months ago,” the 37th-ranked 2022 in the state said. “My high school coach went to OU and started at shortstop and recommended I go there. I went to a camp and they got a hold of (summer coach) Adrian (Abrahamowicz) and I got an offer three weeks ago.

“It was my number one school,” Adams added. “I was leading toward it since my high school coach (Brad Ganor) liked it.”

An unofficial visit with his parents to the Mid-American Conference school came a week following the offer.

“What stood out was it’s an old modern college,” Adams said. “It reminds me of Ignatius. It reminds me of home.”

It will now be a future home for the 12th-rated junior shortstop in Ohio.

“I’ve been playing baseball since I was eight,” Adams related. “Ever since I stepped on the field I’ve known I wanted to pursue a career in baseball. I’ve been chasing down this dream ever since.”

That dream became more realistic back in 2018.

“When I started playing for the Warhawks and went to my first PBR event I started believing I could do this,” Adams explained. “I did well and got my name out there.”

Exposure continued at the Future Games in August.

“That really helped a lot,” pointed out Adams. “I hit it well there, I went 3-for-6 and was on base six of the nine times I was up. OU liked my defense - it’s what they’re known for. They also like speed, that’s what they go for.”

That is an area of the game Adams excels.

“I can bring speed and my ability to steal bases to the program,” Adams noted. “My on-base percentage is good and I’m a twitchy Infielder that brings a lot of high energy to the team.”

This past year Adams has become much faster, dropping his 60 time down from 7.6 to 6.9.

“My strength has also improved a lot,” Adams added. “When I hit gap shots now they’re doubles and triples.”

At his size, Adams appreciates the need to never stop working.

“I’m a smaller guy so I need to keep building on my speed and keep working on my strength to keep pace with everyone around me,” Adams said. “I’m a really focused and driven person. I’m always trying to improve my game and always learning everything I can on the field.”

That happened at the Future Games as part of Team Ohio.

“That was really a challenge,” Adams said of the PBR event. “It was cool to play against the best players the country has to offer. Everyone was trying to be the best. It’s only going to make you better playing against all of those guys.”

Bowling Green was the other college consideration for Adams, who pointed to his father and Abrahamowicz as vital in his development.

“My dad has always pushed me to be better on the field,” Adams related. “Coach Adrian taught me to play the game the right way. Hustle on and off the field even when the game is not going right.”

Business and sport management are potential majors for Adams, a 3.24 student expected to see time at shortstop, second base and third at OU.

“It was a dream come true getting noticed by my first school,” Adams said. “Now that I’ve committed, it’s given me another spark and motivation to be better than I was yesterday.”
