Game Recaps from Day 2 of Tournament 12

Ontario Black vs Ontario Green

Rogers Centre - Ontario Black was home to Ontario Green in the night cap and pitching was the story of this contest.

Starter RJ Freure for Ontario Green was on his game, going five innings, giving up one hit, walking two and striking out six while Ontario Black starter Mitchell Clark went four innings, of one hit ball, walking two and striking out four. Both starters held each team to zero’s in the run column. Ontario Green’s reliever Matt Jones came in for two solid innings, striking out three without giving up a hit. While Ontario Black’s reliever Noah Skirrow came out of the pen for three innings, striking out the first four hitters he faced, walking one, giving up a hit and striking out six in total. Each pitcher was efficient with all their pitches, showing the ability to go in and out, up and down with their fastball, making their offspeed pitches that much better.

It was a tough day at the office for the offense for both teams as they combined for a total of three hits in the game. Center fielder Cooper Davis for Ontario Green got on base twice, one of which was a rocket up the middle. Cooper and Teammate Adam Hall both swiped two bags at the top of the order for Ontario Green, but they couldn’t capitalize on those efforts to drive them in. Thomas Grilli for Team Green came in for a late seventh inning pinch hit single over the second baseman's head into center field but again was left stranded. Ari Sechopoulos had the lone hit for Team Black with an infield single after the third baseman and shortstop collided and couldn’t even get off a throw. The game ended in a 0-0 tie, showing how much of a pitchers duel this really was.

Tomorrow night will see a rematch of the the two teams with another prime time, 8:30 start.

Quebec Blue vs Futures Navy

Rogers Centre - Returning Tournament 12 Champions Quebec Blue took on a young Futures Team in this afternoon game. Ontario showed their youth with pitchers walking 11 Quebec hitters in seven innings. Jonathan Burkhart was the lone bright spot for the Future’s pitching staff, going three innings, striking out five, walking one and giving up no hits out of the bullpen.

Quebec starter Vincent Beauregard had different results in this one. He went three innings, giving up three hits (all singles), striking out five and walking one. Beauregard kept hitters off balance by locating fastballs and mixing in his very sharp slider getting a lot of funky swings and misses from Futures hitters.

Offensively, Futures couldn’t get much going off Quebec pitching. Their first run of the game didn’t come until the fifth inning when shortstop Dondrea Bremner led off the inning with an infield single, followed by a hard hit ball through the left side by Jason Willow putting runners on first and second base. Pinch hitter Daniel Carinci drove in Bremner with a solid opposite field base hit toward the right center gap for the Future’s first run, while Rhys Cratty followed that up with another single to push Willow across the plate. Noah Naylor stayed hot with two hits including a hustling bloop double down the left field line, while Brett Corbeth also contributed with two hits as well (both singles). Unfortunately, that’s all the Futures could muster against Quebec, as they went on to lose by a score of 7-2.
