Ontario Spotlight Game: London Badgers 18U vs Windsor Selects 18U - Doubleheader

Game 1

London – It was a beautiful day for some doubleheader baseball action between the London Badgers and the Windsor Selects, and neither game disappointed. The first pitch of game one was thrown at 1:00pm and it was a pitcher’s duel through and through, with very little offense but an exciting finish.

Zach Banks started for the Badgers and threw a gem. The right-hander was able to throw his fastball down for strikes, and effectively used his curveball and changeup to strike out 11 Windsor batters through six innings of work. Despite the brilliant start, Banks got into some trouble in the 3rd inning after walking Darian Gray to begin the frame, Kyle Cattrysse and Nate Picchioni hit back-to-back opposite-field doubles, opening up the score for the Selects. The Selects would add one more run the following inning behind a throwing error.

Banks’ counterpart on the day was Lackawanna CC commit, Jake Rajsigl. The big righty was sharp through his five innings of work, displaying sinking action on his fastball and a nice hook on his breaking ball.

After falling behind 2-0, the Badgers came right back, as a Tyler D’Alessandro an RBI single put the Londoners on the board. The Badgers would add one more run in the inning.

Things got interesting in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded for the home squad, but Alex Cull would strike out John Geddes and force a fly out to seal the 3-2 win for the Selects in the first half of the Saturday afternoon doubleheader.

Game 2

London – Game two of day went similar to the first. Runs were at a premium as the pitching was solid on both sides. Windsor and London got another chance to showcase some more of their impressive talent as the Badgers looked to tie up the doubleheader at one apiece.

The Windsor Selects got on the board early, taking advantage of a throwing error to score two runs in the first inning. After Patrick Kibble hit a leadoff single to start the second frame, a sac fly from Hunter Dent would allow a third Windsor run to cross the plate. That was all the Selects were able to muster up as Badger starter Connor Ambrogio shut down the Windsor offense, throwing a complete game, inducing a ton of weak contact, commanding his fastball, and displaying a sharp curve ball.

On the mound for Selects, Aidan Massad pitched 5.1 incredible innings, facing the minimum through four innings and leaving the game after allowing just his second hit of the afternoon to DH Zach Banks, who hit a deep double to left-centre. After being shut out through four innings, the Badgers were able to get on the board in the fifth.

In the sixth inning, D’Alessandro hit a booming opposite-field triple and would later come into score, part of a two-run frame for the Badgers, which set up for some late game fireworks in the bottom of the seventh. With one out and runners on first and second, outfielder Will Pollard hit a walk off single, giving the Badgers a 4-3 comeback victory, wrapping up an exciting day of PBLO baseball.
