PBR Michigan Spotlight Game: (D-1) #9 Brother Rice vs (D-2) #1 Orchard Lake St. Mary's

PBR Draft 100 and #1 player in the Michigan class of 2016 Karl Kauffman took the mound for Brother Rice. While unsigned senior Michael Giacalone took the mound for Orchard Lake. The winner of this game would gain the #1 seed in the catholic league playoffs.

Giacalone retired the first three Brother Rice hitters in order ending the top of the first inning with no threat.

Leading off the top of the second inning 2019 Antonio Flores turned on a inside fastball sending if off the gate for a stand up double. Kauffman placed a sacrifice bunt down the 3rd baseline advancing Flores to 3rd. Northern Kentucky commit Preston Pilat scored Flores on a 4-3 ground ball taking an early 1-0 lead.

Brother Rice did their major damage in the top of the 7th inning.

Kauffman drew a lead off walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Pilat also earned a free pass, 2018 Caleb Jackson legged out a drag bunt loading the bases. 2018 JD Allen was hit by pitch scoring Kauffman. 2017 Christian Faust singled to right field scoring both Pilat and Jackson. 2017 Alex Kuster followed up with a single of his own scoring Allen giving Brother rice a 5-0 lead.

Kauffman was in control from the first pitch.

Only two runners on the day reached third base as he used a nice three-pitch mix keeping hitters off balanced while displaying his signature sharp breaking curve. There were multiple MLB scouts in attendance to check out Kauffman as the 2016 MLB amateur draft is vastly approaching. He did not disappoint throwing a complete game with seven strikeouts.
