PBR Ontario Spotlight Game: Thornhill vs West Toronto

Toronto – The 18U Thornhill Reds and the 18U West Toronto Wildcats played on a warm and beautiful Friday evening at Keelesdale Park in Toronto. It was a pitchers duel and the Wildcats beat the Reds 2-0.

Lefty Brad Bishop went six strong innings of two hit ball for the win with eight strikeouts and had Reds hitters off balance all game.

The left-hander mixed his fastball with a sweeping slider and good change and had hitters inducing weak contact all evening. After a long first inning where he gave up two walks, Bishop shook it off and kept the Reds of the scoreboard. He made timely pitches and had strong defense played behind him. Second baseman Daniel Chibana made a diving play in the first to save a run and get Bishop out of a jam.

Chibana did it all with bat and glove. He singled in the first and was stranded, next at-bat he drove in a run with a triple deep to right field. He singled again in the sixth but was quickly caught stealing by Reds catcher Brian Macrae.

Thornhill had runners on in almost every inning and threatened to score but good defense and timely pitches kept them scoreless.

Catcher Macrae was outstanding behind the plate, catching two runners stealing and throwing another out at second after a throw to the plate. He saved runs for his starter Ornello Lannace all night.

The Wildcats scored in the third and seventh inning, the latter gave them insurance heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. In the third inning, West Toronto scored after a hit batter and a single. In the seventh they rallied for two runs on two hits.

Thornhill starting pitcher Lannace threw 63 pitches in 4.1 innings and struck out three. He was strong in his outing and allowed three hits and four walks and hit a batter which hurt him as he came around to score.

In the seventh, West Toronto tacked on another run for insurance. Adam Strauch came into the game relieving Lannace and gave up one run in 2.2 innings, allowing four hits and three walks. Mackenzie Macdonald threw two pitches in relief of Strauch and ended the seventh on a ground ball to short.
