Power 25 Ranking: Week 5

Toby Bicknell
Texas Scouting Director

TEXAS, USA -  It's week five and the top teams in the state are solidifying thier places in the rankings. Teams are seeking a district title, and clubs that play in more competitive districts are starting to make moves within our ranking. While the idea here is to truly separate the best teams in the state, no matter how big or small, private or public, our “boots on the ground” scouting staff is constantly out scouting and evaluating teams in almost every corner of Texas. With that being said, our staff has seen 23 of the 25 teams in this ranking play at least once.

Top 5

#1 Colleyville Heritage has held down the No. 1 spot for the entire 2019 season, and that is where they stay after going 3-0 this week with two wins over Saginaw by a combined score of 25-0 and a 4-1 win over Southlake Carroll on Saturday. This week will be a great test for the Panthers as they play Azle on Tuesday/Friday.

#2 Argyle has an 18-1-1 Overall record with two wins last week, Richland 12-2, and Crandall 4-2. The Eagles have a potent lineup, with plenty of strike throwers on the mound. They have faced the top left-handers that the state of Texas can offer, and they will have another strong test on Friday against Decatur at home.

#3 Lake Travis is still undefeated and an argument could be made for them to be No. 1 in the state. The Cavaliers played one game last week, beating Del Valle 20-1.

#4 Cypress Ranch comes in at 18-2 with two wins over Cypress Lakes and one over Cypress Park. Fun fact, the pitching staff did not allow a single run last week.

#5 Georgetown is a fun club to watch play, Coach Foster has his group clicking on all cylinders to start the season at 18-2 with mulitple marquee wins. The Eagles are now 4-0 in District, 18-2 Overall with a two game sweep over Elgin by a combined score of 22-1.

Not much else changed over the last week with the same 25 teams staying in the rankings with only subtle changes. Oak Ridge, Veterans Memorial, Houston Memorial, CC King, and Kingwood all move up a spot or two. The Woodlands had a rough 0-2 week, losing a 1-0 ballgame to a strong Klein Collins team, and a dropping a 9-7 decision to Cypress Fair. This club still has a strong resume at 15-5 Overall and for now, they come in at 14. McAllen dropped a game to Pharr-San Juan-Alamo and are now 16-5, they go from No. 11 to No. 15.

Private Schools

The top three private schools in the state are included in the rankings again this week, much to the objection of some public school coaches. However, we have seen them play live and thier records reflect a quality body of work. No. 17 Kinkaid is now 16-2, 3-0 in District with wins over St. John’s, and Episcopal last week. No. 23 Prestonwood Christian Academy has been young the past two years, and they are cashing in this season. We saw front line starter and TCU commit 2020 Luke Savage dominate on Friday. The Lions also have 2020 LHP River Ridings (TCU) and 2019 RHP McCrae Wiest (Ozarks) to bookend a solid rotation. We saw No. 25 FW All Saints two weeks ago and these guys have a physical lineup and solid rotation with Mason Speaker, Matthew Tieding, and Jacob Speaker. They drop from 21 to 25 after losing a game to Trinity Christian Academy last week.

Bubble Teams

This list could go on for days with a state as large as Texas, but here is the short list.

District 6-6A
Flower Mound started out in the Power 25 and are now 4-0 in District, 16-7 Overall after defeating Irving twice last week. This club has the arms to go the distance this year, and they play in a strong district that provides for a strong strength of schedule.

Right next to them is crosstown rival Marcus, who is now 4-0 in District, 16-4 Overall. The Marauders have a strong opponent this week Hebron (14-7 Overall, 3-1 District). We would expect at least one of the teams from 6-6A to emerge into the Power 25, especially when you add in Coppell. These four teams will duke it out over the last 5 weeks of the season.

Gregory-Portland is now 16-2 after going 2-0 this week with a 4-0 win over Alice and 5-1 win over Laredo Martin. They still have big games against Tuloso Midway, Calallen, Rockport, and Incarnate Word Academy. Time will tell if they make an appearance in the Power 25, but everyone needs to be on notice that these guys can play.

Tomball is now 14-1-2 with a 5-0 district record with several quality wins against Katy, Katy Tompkins, and Kingwood Park.

Aledo is now 15-2 Overall, 4-0 in district after they beat WF Rider 10-0 and Euless Trinity 9-1. The Bearcats have legitimate argument for being included in the Ranking with their stregnth of schedule in the early season tournaments. Wins over Wakeland, Southlake, and Burleson Centennial, and the only losses being to strong clubs from Flower Mound and Denton Guyer.

District 9-6A
Dont look know, but Allen HS is 15-4 Overall, 4-0 in District. The Eagles have swept the first two weeks of District against Plano, and McKinney. No. 8 Prosper (19-2, 4-0) is the team to beat, but from top to bottom, this may be the strongest district in the state with McKinney Boyd (14-7, 3-1), Plano West, Dallas Jesuit (14-7), and Plano. Although Plano West and Plano don’t have eye-popping records, both of these clubs are solid. We still think another team from this district will get in to the Power 25 before the year is over.
