Preseason All State: Preview

Brett Thorney
Arizona Scouting Director

This Sunday, Jan. 26, the PBR Arizona team will kick off the new year with our annual Preseason All State at Phoenix Municipal Stadium, home of the Arizona State Sun Devils. For the past few years, this event has provided our staff with an opportunity to evaluate some of the top high school-aged prospects from all across the state of Arizona. This invite only event has proved to be a must attend event to some of the area’s top talent. Historically, this event has shown us some key players to keep an eye on moving forward.

We are expecting a lot of talent in this year's event, aging from 2020-2023 graduates. There are over 75 prospects lined up to join us for this weekend’s sold out event.

When taking a look back at last year’s roster, the talent displayed was hard to miss with several players committing to play college baseball. Some of the higher profile names included SS Teagan Carey (Chaparral; Oregon commit), SS Chase Valentine (Sandra Day O’Connor; Texas A&M commit), LHP Kyler Stancato (Mountain Ridge; Washington State commit), SS Daniel Davila (Flowing Wells; New Mexico), C Ryan Ellis (Mountain Ridge, St. Mary’s), among a number of others. LHP Drew Woody (Highland, Sacramento State Commit) who attended last year’s event will be back at the event again this year as well.

Looking at this year's roster, there should continue to be plenty of depth across the board with just as much talent on hand, if not more. There will be a couple of 2020 players in attendance this year highlighted by Arizona State commit, Ronan Kopp (Scottsdale Christian), who is currently ranked No. 1 in the PBR 2020 State Player Rankings. Kopp is a highly projectable LHP who was last seen sitting at 93mph, running his FB up to 95mph with a firm slider last week. He will have plenty of eyes on him this spring and will be looking to improve his MLB draft stock come June. Look for Kopp to create some buzz this spring and at the Preseason All State on Sunday.

2020 LHP Ronan Kopp (Scottsdale Christian)

One of the top uncommitted prospects in attendance on Sunday looks to be 1B Tyler Stone (Chaparral, 2020), who was previously committed to New Mexico. Stone, at 6’3” 220lbs is a left handed hitting 1B with a consistent bat combined with some power potential. Another top uncommitted arm in attendance will be RHP Kaden Schiefelbein (Liberty, 2021). Schiefelbein at a lean 6’2” 170lbs that was in the upper 80’s this past fall, pitching downhill with above average secondary stuff.

There also seems to be wealth of talent in the underclassmen this year. Some of the more noteworthy 2022 players that should be followed closely are C Derek Smith (Horizon, 2022), RHP Dillon Orr (Shadow Ridge) SS Nick Arias (Tucson), and RHP Marcus Delgado (Canyon Del Oro). Arias, Delgado & Orr were 2019 Future Games Participants that will be looking to earn their spot back to Emerson, Georgia this year. Smith was a standout at the Top Prospect Games last summer with his athleticism behind the plate.

2022 SS/RHP Nick Arias (Tucson)

From our past coverage, the 2023 class seems to be one of the classes with the most depth in the state. Some prospects to keep an eye on are LHP/1B Zach Wadas (Brophy College Prep), C Carsen McEntire (Mountain Ridge), SS Nuri Todd (Brophy College Prep), & C/SS Tyler Acton (Verrado) among others. All were standouts throughout our event coverage this past fall including events like PBR Arizona Fall Championships.

Who else will emerge as a prospect to watch going forward? We cant wait to find out.
