South Texas Underclass Trials: Quick Hits

Phil Haig
Texas Scouting Director

KATY, T.X. - On June 1, our PBR Texas Staff hosted our South Texas Underclass Trials to a much anticipated showcase and trials on the welcoming confines of Cotton Ranch. The event featured a highly talented group of prospects in the 2022-2025 classes. Here is a look at a few players who made strong impressions during their workout.

QUICK HITS

Jason Bodin OF / RHP / Orangefield , TX / 2023

Orangefield 2023, lanky athletic RHP/OF showed off a big arm topping 86 mph on the bump with arm-side run, flashed a changeup at 78-81 mph with good depth and a curveball with late, biting action at 72-73 mph. He topped out at 91 mph from the outfield. Bodin has a high ceiling on the mound with a fastball that projects as a plus pitch.

Logan Simmons RHP / 1B / Silsbee, TX / 2023

Silsbee 2023, country strong right-handed pitcher. Simmons showed a firm fastball that was 81-83 mph and touched 85 mph. Simmons throws from a high ¾ slot, near over the top with a high front side and mixes in a changeup and curveball with the changeup showing more promise. Look for the velo to rise as he grows into his tree trunk legs.

Micah Dean SS / RHP / William B. Travis, TX / 2023

2023 from Fort Bend Travis flashed early in the day with a 6.85 60 yard dash. Dean bounced around the infield showing good athletic actions and a strong arm. At the plate, he hit the ball well up the middle and to the pull side with good pop topping out at 85 mph exit velo. Flashed potential on the mound as well running his fastball up to 82 mph.

Blake Brown SS / C / Lake Creek , TX / 2023

The 2023 SS from Montgomery Lake Creek bounces around the infield with solid actions across the board. Had a solid day at the plate as well hitting balls all over the field with a max exit velocity of 91 with a clean, athletic swing. Brown is very projectable and will be exciting to watch his growth over the next couple years.

Jackson Braun OF / SS / Cypress Christian, TX / 2022

Athletic 2023 OF from Cypress Christian moves well in the outfield with a loose arm that was up to 78 mph with good carry. Offensively, he features a smooth, simple load with a fast bat hitting a lot of line drives from gap-to-gap with a max exit velocity of 89 mph. Really good athlete that has a high ceiling as he continues to grow.

Landry Hamm SS / 2B / Ridge Point, TX / 2023

5-foot-11, 147-pound, lean projectable infielder moved around well on defense at STX UC Trials. Showed clean exchanges with good footwork and a quick release. At the plate he gets his foot down early and has a quick bat that was spraying line drives from gap-to-gap. Look for him to grow at the plate as he adds more weight to his frame.

Garet Boehm SS / RHP / Hutto, TX / 2023

Boehm once again performed well all around in front of our staff. He moves really well in the field with quick hands and fluid footwork and a really strong arm, throwing 90 mph across the diamond. Athletic hitter at the plate with a fast bat hitting balls with authority all over the place with a max exit velocity of 91 mph on the day. On the bump, he sat 84-85 mph topping 86 mph, which was a jump up from 81 mph when we saw him in January.

Hudson Hamilton 3B / RHP / Grand Oaks, TX / 2023

Dual-sport athlete as he is also QB1 for Grand Oaks. 6-foot, 195-pound Hamilton had one of the louder rounds of BP with a max exit velocity of 93 mph. On the bump, he was 79-81 mph, touching 82 mph, flashing late arm side run. Flashed a curveball at 68-69 mph with good downward action.

Macoy Marze C / 3B / Orangefield, TX / 2022

2023 backstop from Orangefield showed well behind the plate with a 1.90 pop time and 77 mph velocity. Marze displayed soft hands with quick, clean footwork and exchanges, stays square to the ball well when blocking. Shows flashes of loud contact during BP with a max exit velocity of 87 mph.
