Southern Nevada Preseason ID - Pitcher Analysis

Buddy Gouldsmith
Nevada Scouting Director

The Southern Nevada Preseason ID concluded with the pitching portion of the event. With winds picking up and blowing directly against the performing pitcher, velocities and command were affected. Concluding our event analysis, PBR Nevada takes a look at some of our top performers from the event.

Top Performers

2022 Demitri Diamant, RHP (Bishop Gorman)

Stocky, 5-foot-10 175, Diamant is has a strong body with developed lower half.  He is an upright short strider, throwing over a stiff front side.  He has a feel for three pitches with occasional run on a fastball ranging, 81-84.  His curveball has good spin and consistent depth at 70 mph.  Diamant has steady arms speed on his changeup at 76.  This is an athlete toeing the rubber, pure arm strength and pitch action will allow him to compete. Delivery adjustments could lend to a potential front-line arm, making him a two-way prospect.

2020 Noah Glaser LHP (Bishop Gorman)

Mature, 5-foot-11, 185, Glaser has a compact frame with a developed lower half.  He repeats his delivery with a tendency to spin off a stiff front side.  There is some upside in a consistent ability to gain more extension out front. His fastball ranged 78-79 with occasional arm side run. His breaking ball had solid spin, producing depth at 62-63.  Glaser has a tendency to short arm the breaking ball which manufacturers the depth but lacks deception.  He maintains good change of speeds, mostly straight with some hints of fade. The left-hander shows some pitchability and competitiveness which will carry him forward.

2021, Michael Carroll, RHP (Faith Lutheran)

Lean, 6-foot-5 175, Carrol has a projectable body with a long torso. He pitched with a fastball ranging 76-77. He maintains a consistent downhill plane from a high ¾ slot.  His arm swing is short and he delivers with a high front side to provide some additional deception.  With a feel for three pitches, he threw consistent strikes. His curveball was 64-65, while his changeup came in 69-70.  The changeup lends to belief that there is more in the fastball. Carroll comes from good bloodlines and expect him to consistently pick up velocity with size and strength gains.

2020, Demitrius Vigil, RHP (Basic)

Lanky, 6-foot-3, 175, Vigil is a lean, projectable pitcher, throwing with a high ¾ arm action.  He repeated an upright delivery with a solid feel for three pitches. An accomplished basketball player, Vigil was in the middle of a state basketball playoff run and took the time to come out and perform.  His fastball was up to 78 but expect more this spring when in baseball shape. His curveball had consistent shape and he threw a solid changeup. The fastball and changeup display occasional straight fade.  Keep a close eye on Vigil, he has the athleticism and present feel to make huge jumps in a short period of time.

2021, Jordan Writer, RHP (Coronado)

Sturdy 6-foot, 160, Writer has a durable body with some present strength. He has a short quick arm with an up-tempo delivery. The consistent arm speed and strength supplied a solid differential between his fastball, up to 81, and changeup, ranging 71-72.  The curveball velocity was a little lite for he has a tendency to “choke” it a bit.  He displays an aggressive intent and will need to improve his spray command, but there is most certainly something to work with.  Don’t be surprised to see him mid to upper 80s in the not so distant future.

2021 Dylan Dirig, RHP, (Desert Oasis)

Lean, 5-foot-10, 155, Dirig has a developing frame that has already seen weight and strength improvements since the fall. He throws from a high ¾ slot with short, “catcher” type arm action. With work there is likely more extension to be had, thus velocity. His fastball was up to 78, pitching 76-77. Curveball and changeup were both consistently 66. The curveball has nice down action. He maintains consistent arm speed with an upright delivery and short stride.  He loads his bottom half well and delivery stability has improved in just a few short months.  His arm action lends to relief type role and it is easy to see him topping out in the upper 80s down the road.  His future is likely behind the plate, but he will most definitely see time on the mound in the coming years.

2020 Payton Brooks, RHP (Arbor View)

Lean, 5-foot-8, 130, Brooks has a projectable frame with long legs.  He has a long loose arm action and repeatable delivery.  In spite of limited leverage, he consistently threw down hill relying on plane over life with his fastball, ranging 75-76.  His breaking ball had solid definition with consistent arm speed as did his changeup. His delivery and arm action lead me to believe there is much more in this young man.  Possibly a late physical bloomer, that will make a jump in the next few years.  His youthful appearance along with stature but his polish and poise make me believe his best days are ahead.  I am going to keep a close eye on this guy.

Best of the Rest

2021, Christian Dijkman, RHP (Faith Lutheran)

Thick, 6-foot, 220, Dijkman is a wide body right-hander with a short arm and solid extension out front. He maintains a short stride and tends to spin off his front side, but repeats and throws a lot of strikes.  He is a three-pitch mix with a present feel for the bottom of the zone which will allow him to compete. His fastball was up to 76, while the breaking ball came in low 60s. The changeup displayed solid speed differential of 8-10 mph.  Dijkman impressed with his ability to fill up the bottom of the zone with 3 pitches.

2022, Hunter Mark, LHP (Bishop Gorman)

Youthful, 5-foot-11, 180, Mark has present mass in developing size and strength. He will benefit from natural maturation and a strength/conditioning program. He pitched from an all stretch delivery with a fastball in the low 70s. He took almost 20 mph off to throw his curveball while the velocity of his changeup maintained a solid 10 mph differential.  Mark has a methodical delivery with the tempo and arm speed to match.  He flashed spin on the breaking ball but wrist play, pre-grip, and hand speed effect its velocity.  This is a young man still developing and there is strength in his lower half to draw on.  He had solid zone feel with 3 pitches, throwing consistent strikes.

2022, Grayson Parmer, RHP (Galena)

Youthful, 6-foot 175, Parmer has a thick wide frame in a developing body. Present mass and strength will benefit from natural maturation and strength/conditioning program. He delivers from a ¾ arm slot with an upright delivery and short stride. He has a developing repertoire that will be enhanced with a more efficient use of his lower half. He loads his nicely with a slight hip turn, followed by a leg swing on his way to the plate.  There is an apparent feel for spin but he pre grips the breaking ball as well as the change of speeds.  Plenty of time for Parmer to carve his path with shear natural strength, should be interesting to monitor progress in the years to come.

2021 Austin Cates, RHP (Coronado)

Thick, 6-foot 205, Cates is burly with present weight and strength in his lower half. He repeats an upright delivery from a high ¾ slot with a short arm swing and has the ability to get out over his front side. His mid 70s fastball is straight and finds the zone regularly. He pre-grips his breaking ball that has solid shape when down in the zone. He maintains feel for a straight change up, creating a potential 3 pitch mix guy down the line. Velocity and overall pitch definition need to improve to be a factor on the mound at the next level but youthful size and strength make for interesting follow.
