Team Canada JNT vs Phillies Recap

The Canadian pitching staff continued to perform well but ultimately fell 6-3 to a group of prospects from the Phillies as they continued their first trip of the season in St. Petersburg, Florida.

It was an all Ontario lineup on the mound as two arms from the Toronto Mets, Mitch Bratt and Drew Howard, put up three quality innings while Calvin Ziegler of the Great Lakes Canadians worked three innings of his own.

Bratt got the start for Team Canada and was in a rhythm, picking up five strikeouts and allowing just one walk and one earned run. It was the 2021 Florida State commits first appearance this spring against pro hitters and he was able to get ahead in counts and miss barrels.

Ziegler came on in relief to begin the 4th inning and allowed two earned runs on two hits and a walk in the inning but settled in the following two innings. The UConn commit was able to pick up three strikeouts and allowed just one walk, flashing a breaking ball that was difficult to lay off at times by the Phillies hitters.

Howard worked the final three innings matched Bratt with five strikeouts while limiting the Phillies offense to just one run. Howard worked with a fastball/curveball combination and had command of both pitches and lived in the low 90s during his outing.

The top of the order also came through for Canada as two standouts from this week, David Calabrese and Elijha Hammill, picked up a single, a walk, a run and a stolen base apiece while Owen Caissie chipped in with a single as well.

Calabrese also had a chance to show off his speed and defense from the outfield as he went back on a ball hit over his head in centre and layed out to make an incredible diving grab.

The rest of Canada’s six hits came off the bats of Emilien Pitre, Nate Ochoa and Brando Leroux.

The team put up some quality at-bats against several tough pitchers from the Phillies and will need to carry that into tomorrow as they take on a Blue Jays team that will feature several big leaguers including Ontario native Jordan Romano who will get the start.

The pitching staff will have a healthy dose of veterans as Theo Millas will get the start followed by Justin Thorsteinson, Jack Seward and Connor O’Halloran with each pitcher scheduled for two to three innings.

It will be the only time during the trip that Team Canada hits the road as they head to newly renovated TD Ballpark in Dunedin. Make sure to stay tuned in as we provide updates and coverage all day long from the Blue Jays Spring Training headquarters.
