Team Preview: St. Patrick Catholic

Ronald Sims
Mississippi Scouting Director

The Mississippi high school season kicks off on February 26, the first day for regular season games. Most teams will begin practicing on January 29, getting their rosters set and finalizing their lineups.

Over the next several weeks, leading up to opening day, we will be rolling out team previews of high school teams all across the state and across all classifications, eventually launching our Preseason Power 25.

We have been sending out our annual Preseason Questionnaire to coaches all across the state and as the responses flood in we will bring you a snapshot of what to expect along with top players and keys to success for that particular team. If you don’t see your team’s season preview make sure your head coach fills out his Preseason Questionnaire.

Outlook

Coach Eddie Burger and the Fighting Iris look to improve on their 11 win season from 2018 and have their sights set on making a deeper run in the playoffs in 2019. The Fighting Iris return six position players that started last year and five guys on the mound that contributed. The team does welcome back a fair amount of experience but they will still some young talent that will play a big role in the lineup. Two underclassmen will carry the load on the mound this year, 2020 RHP Dylan Fontan and 2021 LHP Blake Gollot. Fontan has a physical frame with the ability to pitch in the low to mid 80's while Gollot showed a lot of upside participating in the recent Preseason Prospect ID running his fastball up to 80 mph. Although the Fighting Iris having some young pieces, they should be in the thick of things in divisional play.
