The Five: Uncommitted 2020 Outfielders

Brett Harrison
Nevada Scouting Director

This week we take a look at the top outfielders still on the board in the 2020 class. With a senior class stacked with prospects, there is still a wealth talent yet to be scooped up. The remaining outfielders in this class might be the most exciting position to watch this upcoming spring with each of these five prospects showing projectable tools that could flourish as they continue to develop. Basic Academy's Zach Hose, #4 OF/#17 overall, leads the pack of talented outfielders still on the board, but Leuga's power, Pauly's size and Gladney's speed should have schools buzzing come this spring.

Zachary Hose OF / RHP / Basic, NV / 2020

Hose is the top remaining outfielder in the 2020 class. He is an athletic outfielder with a tapered frame. He has a great first step that makes him a threat to take hits away from opposing offenses paired with an above average arm that shows good carry on throws from the outfield. At the plate, he has an easy rhythm with a compact load and small leg kick that keeps him in his legs throughout his swing. He has an efficient hand path to the ball allowing him to find the barrel consistently. Hitting .372 for Basic Academy last year, Hose looks to continue his positive trend of improving at the plate each year in both the average and power categories.

Maxwell Leuga OF / C / Green Valley, NV / 2020

Leuga has a sturdy, durable body that will likely lend to corner outfield with weight and strength gains.  He is a confident and reliable outfielder with the actions for the position.  He has good body control and the ability to put himself in position to throw on variety of plays, both with time to set up and on the move.  He maintains playable arm strength that plays up due to his footwork and exchange. Leuga ran well for his size and that may allow him to stay in center field.  At the plate, he maintains a solid combination of strength and bats speed.  He starts with legs bent and stays in his legs well, drawing on his strength to provide potential power. He made consistent quality contact, maintaining an aggressive approach with good balance.  A potential middle of the order type bat with the tolls to stay in centerfield will draw a lot of attention.

Sean Pauly OF / 1B / Galena, NV / 2020

Pauly is a physical corner outfielder that throws from an overhand slot.  The slot provides a true throw with good carry. He runs well for his size and shows reliable glove skills with a solid transition to throw. At the plate, he has good feel for the barrel with a manageable length to a flat swing plane. He sets with a high back elbow, gripping the bat deep in his palm, hooking his top hand. Pauly’s game has an unfinished feel but is appealing due to his athleticism accompanied by his size and strength.  He makes consistent loud contact and work and development could see a middle of the order bat down the line.

Zach Foster OF / RHP / McQueen, NV / 2020

An athletic build with slightly sloped shoulders that taper to a small waist and lower half built for speed.  He showed an accurate arm with on target throws and good carry.  He has an aggressive swing with potential for power. He ran well underway.

Donovan Gladney OF / Rancho , NV / 2020

Gladney has a tapered build in a small frame.  He is athletic with quick twitch and good strength. He posted an event best 6.57 60-yard dash. He has an explosive first step, getting to full speed quickly. He profiles as a centerfield, leadoff type guy.  He maintains a compact line drive swing in a middle of the field approach that is short to and through the ball. His twitch was evident in his 85 MPH exit velocity off the tee. He recorded multiple extra base hits during the game, including one hopping the centerfield wall for a triple. He totaled three hits on the day. Defensively, he covers a lot of ground with closing speed. A positional velocity of 75 mph, he has enough arm strength to use a quick exchange and hit the cutoff.  There is an attractive, unpolished element to his game that provides for a high ceiling with the advent of a strong short game to accompany his game changing speed. His strength and twitch could provide some sneaky power down the line as well.
