Top-10 Profiles of 2019: No. 9 Owen Washburn
December 17, 2019
We'll be spending the rest of the month detailing the players who earned the most clicks to their profiles throughout 2019 ending with the state's most-viewed profile of the year, set to be released on Dec. 31. We started the countdown yesterday with our No. 10 most-viewed profile of the year, and we’re onto the No. 9 today, 2B/RHP Owen Washburn (Webster).
We actually spent a little bit of time covering Washburn in our No. 10 most important story of the year, Team Wisconsin’s trip to the PBR Future Games where it was held at LakePoint for the first time. There, few prospects came away with more buzz than Washburn and he ultimately landed on a commitment to South Carolina.
Washburn has some real long-term two-way possibilities. He has more pop than meets the eye from the left side – balls jump from his left-handed barrel more than you might expect from his 6-foot, 170-pound frame. He’s an all-around athlete and that helps him move well on the infield, and probably fits best at second base. On the mound, Washburn came out firing at LakePoint, touching 89 mph with his first pitch. He also mixed in a sharp 12/6 breaking ball at the high-profile event and, given his size, there’s still a ton of projection yet to be tapped into, making him one of the top prospects in Wisconsin’s 2021 class.
