Top Performer Spotlight: 2020 RHP/INF Treven Crowley
September 9, 2018
Our Northern California Underclass Trials event on June 12th provided us an opportunity to see many players who were vying for a spot at the Northern California Underclass Games, which recently took place on August 25th at Sacramento State University. Many outstanding young players attended those trials and the best of the best were selected to be part of the games.
As we head into the fall/winter season we will be highlighting "Top Performer Spotlights" on players who really stood out at past events. In this edition we'll take a look at 2020 RHP/INF Treven Crowley of Hilmar HS.

TOP PERFORMER SPOTLIGHT
QUICK TAKE
Two-way talents, and in particular those who are SS/P, often are the young players who stand out the most. That's certainly the case with Crowley. He's got arm talent on the mound, with secondary stuff that also projects. As a position player he's got a smooth and athletic swing and moves well all around the field. He likely will be recruited as a pitcher, but who knows? Hopefully he continues to play and pitch throughout his high school years before a decision is made.
SCOUTING REPORT
8/25/18 - Uncommitted. A top performer from the Underclass Trials, he didn't disappoint at the Underclass Games as he continues to show as one of the top 2020 talents in Northern California. Arm talent showed up once again, topping at 89 mph on the mound in game competition and reached 88 mph across the diamond in the defensive evaluations. Arm is fast and loose, fastball is lively in the zone with late action. Attacking/challenging approach on mound with good athleticism. Delivery has deliberate tempo at beginning then he explodes as his lead leg starts down after an abbreviated lift. As good as the fastball was, his last pitch was a snap-dragon breaking ball that locked up a quality hitter. Throws the curveball with an aggressive arm action making hitter think fastball. Change-up appeared to be a BP fastball which was a nice change of pace of the upper-80s fastball. Faced three batters (backward K, 4-3, and backward K on the curveball). The more he gains control of his body and doesn't rush his stuff, the better he will be. Talented kid on the mound. Offensively and defensively he also has a shot, with a smooth left-handed swing with a fluid load and line drive approach, runs well underway and he's got that big arm, though he will lose some of that velocity across the diamond when he incorporates a natural and quicker release. In two at-bats he lined out to centerfield on a change-up and grounded out 4-3.
6/12/18 - Lean and athletic body type on 6-foot-1 155-pound frame. One of Northern California's top 2020 prospects. Arm strength is a tool that definitely stood out, both in the defensive workout (89 mph across the diamond) and on the mound (more on that in the post about pitchers). Some throws were a bit wild but some of that was just in his effort to show the raw arm strength. Backing off a bit he still has plenty of arm. Ran 7.13 and showed a lively left-handed swing during the batting practice round. Was one of the most impressive all-around athletes and talents at the trials. Strictly looking at him as a pitcher, he got up to 89 mph and sat in the 87-88 mph range for is pen session. He pitches from a high-3/4 slot and has a fast, loose arm with a longer arm action. His lift is short and unique in that regard. Crowley's curveball is a good one, a potential out-pitch at the collegiate level (possibly beyond), with 11/5 action and late power type break. Also showed a change-up that has a chance.
