Top Stories of the Year

Phil Wade
Indiana Executive Director

With 2018 soon to be upon us, today we look back at some of the top story lines from the 2017 season.

Indiana loses two Hall of Famers

INDIANA BASEBALL 'DINOSAUR' JIM REINEBOLD PASSES AT 87

Reinebold was one of the first inducted into the first Hall of Fame class of Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association in 1979, an organization he helped found in 1971.

That makes sense because No. 4 was an original.

Generally credited with starting the tradition of presenting a “dinosaur” T-shirt to 20-year veterans of the IHSBCA, Reinebold did not shy away from the prehistoric description when it was attached to him.

A “dinosaur” in Reinebold’s gleaming eyes meant “you’ve been around a long time.”

BASEBALL TRAILBLAZER KEN SCHREIBER OF LAPORTE DIES AT 83

The folks of LaPorte, Indiana and beyond got a chance to say “thank you” in the summer of 2016 when a sign was placed at the corner of 10th and I streets.

Ken Schreiber Way salutes the trailblazing baseball coach lived on that four-block stretch of street while building the baseball showplace — which became known as Schreiber Field — in front of it.

From 1960 until stepping down early during the 1998 season, Schreiber won 1,010 games and lost just 217 and gained the respect of thousands — not only in Indiana — but around the baseball world.

Greenfield Central Star, Drey Jameson, Earns 2017 POY

2017 INDIANA PLAYER OF THE YEAR: GREENFIELD CENTRAL RHP/OF DREY JAMESON

The 2017 season featured many stellar individual performances across the Hoosier State, with many worthy of being named player of the year.  However, one player for us in particular, stood out above the rest; Greenfield Central's Drey Jameson

A legitimate two-way prospect, Jameson's overall athleticism stands out in all facets of the game. The 6-foot, 160 pound Ball State signee went 6-1 this season including throwing two no-hitters with 112 Ks and a 0.65 ERA.  Offensively, he was equally impressive hitting over .400 with 22 RBI, 9 2B, 7 HR and swiping 10 bases.

Team Indiana Shows off Loaded Roster

TEAM INDIANA SHINES AT THE INAUGURAL PBR FALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Behind the top three hitters in its lineup and strong pitching, Team Indiana cruised to a 5-2 victory over the Iowa Sticks Friday night, highlighting the first day of action at the PBR Fall Championship. 2B Jared Poland (Cathedral HS, IN), SS Riley Bertram (Zionsville HS, IN) and OF Nick Schnell(Roncalli HS, IN) combined to go 7-for-8 with five runs scored and four RBIs. Poland got things started by smoking a triple over the left fielder’s head, using a short, simple swing and direct path. Bertram followed with a single to drive in Poland and open the scoring. Team Indiana tacked on three more runs in the third after Poland led off with a hard single to left field. He stole second before Bertram blooped a ball into right field for a double that drove in Poland. Schnell then squared a ball up for an RBI triple to deep left-center field and came into score on a sacrifice fly by 1B Jack Van Remortel (Carmel HS, IN). In the fifth, Poland went the other way, squaring up a double to right field. Bertram collected his third RBI of the night with a hard single to left.
