Brendan Mahood
PBR Ontario Intern

On Tuesday, August 1st, the PBR Ontario staff hosted the Toronto Summer Open at Dan Lang Field in Scarborough, Ontario. This event featured 35 prospects from the 2024 - 2027 classes and allowed our staff an opportunity to get an in-depth look at the players, along with assessing them using our various tech partners.

Today we continue our post-event coverage with a second set of Quick Hits, providing five more scouting reports on standouts from the event.

TORONTO SUMMER OPEN: QUICK HITS II

Jud McGowan SS / RHP / Lakefield College School, ON / 2025

Jud had himself a day to be proud of on Tuesday. The Peterborough Tigers ‘25 classman put together one of the most intriguing BP rounds of the event, playing to his pull side for power with a max exit velocity of 88mph. McGowan works from the left side with a quiet load and direct bat path. Had a knack for the inside pitch, getting the hands out front time and time again for deep fly balls. Defensively, some of the better actions on the day at short. Strong footwork, cut down angles efficiently and moved through the ball at any chance possible. Body looks the part, and has lots to work with moving forward at 6-foot-2, 170 pounds. Jud made his presence known at the Toronto Summer Open, and will be an interesting ‘25 to follow moving forward.

James Colella OF / LHP / Bill Crothers, ON / 2025

James Collela brought a ton of presence to the mound. High-waisted, very fluid and athletic mover on the bump who showed an above average spin profile on all three of his pitches. Fastball that ran between 76-80mph flashed some interesting arm side movement, and the heavy downward breaking ball profiles as an effective strikeout pitch. With more growth and polish inevitably in store, Collela could give hitters problems from the left side for years to come. The athleticism also profiles well in the OF.

Jehmar Harrison SS / NA - N/A - Not Available, ON / 2027

Jehmar Harrison is a name to watch going forward in Ontario. The young outfielder produced some of the best exit velocities of the day, topping at 88.9mph and was consistently in the low-mid 80’s with loft, spraying baseballs all over the left side of the field for deep fly balls. Rotational hitter that coils well out of a narrow, open setup and utilizes a toe tap. Impressive stroke for his age with plenty of room still to grow at 5-foot-10, 158lb. Advanced overall game from the Etobicoke Ranger that should continue to trend up.

Luca Valvo SS / AN Myer, ON / 2025

Luca showed well on Tuesday with one of the better bullpens we saw. The righthander set up camp in the strike zone throughout his pen and showed three viable pitches that should play well in a live scenario. The fastball lived at 79mph with sink and was complemented by a tight slider that tunneled quite well. Long arm action from Valvo that creates awkward angles for hitters. Added velocity will make for strides in his game, but the pitchability looks to be there now.

Max Van dam LHP / Ancaster high school, ON / 2024

Van Dam’s bullpen was no short of eye-opening. The ‘24 lefthander showed us an uber-deceptive three pitch mix for consistent strikes out of a cross-body slot, highlighted by a slider that broke into the 2400+ RPM range. Fastball came back to the arm side, while the changeup was an equally impressive offering with enough fade to stay off of barrels. Creates angles that look exceedingly difficult to hitters from both sides of the plate, and has impressed in recent game action. At 6-feet, 145lb, he still has a lot of frame to play with. Exciting arm that should continue to be a tough AB as he grows.
