Uncommitted Spotlight: 2020 IF/RHP Josh Johnson

Brett Harrison
Nevada Scouting Director

Josh Johnson, '20, is a high ceiling two-way player who could get it done both in the infield, #4 ranked shortstop and #15 overall, as well as on the mound. His actions in the infield are well documented while his full potential on the mound remains to be seen, as he has only thrown a four total innings total his sophomore and junior seasons at Coronado. But, multiple quality outings in the fall for the Dodgers Elite Scout Team are a positive sign for the right hander. Johnson throws with a repeated, drop and drive delivery with a fastball sitting 86-87 periodically touching 88 complimented with an above average curveball. His projectable, lean body should give the velo a bump as he continues to develop both mechanically and in strength. This prospect should be attracting a lot of attention heading into his senior season for the Cougars.

Scouting Report

2/10/19 -Athletic, 6-foot-1, 180, Johnson is a projectable infielder with room for weight and strength gains. He has reliable infield actions and fields with confidence.  With size and strength gains, he may profile at third base down the line.  He has enough arm strength to play anywhere on the field and a feel for changing his arm slot to start double plays and make plays on the run. At the plate, He stands with slightly flexed legs, utilizing a leg kick trigger and tipping the barrel while swinging with bat speed, exemplified by his 94 mph exit velocity. He has good barrel release and projectable power with a combination of bat speed and leverage, maintaining good posture throughout his swing. if Johnson's arm strength and feel transition to the mound, he may very well be a legit two-way player in college.
