Underclass Invitational: Outfielder Analysis

On Sunday, February 15, Prep Baseball Report Virginia/DC hosted its first event of 2015, the Underclass Invitational for members of the 2017 and 2018 graduating classes. Over 70 players showcased their skills for PBR staff at Virginia Sports Complex in Ruther Glen, Virginia. All of these players will be eligible to receive invites to the Top Prospect Games (2017 Grads) at English Field on the campus of Virginia Tech and the Top Prospect Games (2018 Grads) at Liberty University this summer.  Players from this event will also be eligible to be selected to represent Team Virginia/D.C. in the Future Games Powered by Under Armour that will take place in Westfield, IN on July 29 – August 1.

outfielder analysis:

+Chris Brubaker, OF/RHP, Fairfax, 2017
Hit from a tall/balanced stance with high hands.  Smooth load back.  Short stride with a slight leg kick.  Good balance throughout the swing.  Took a good approach during the round with a fluid rhythm.  Short, level bat path with extension.  Line drive stroke with strong hands.  Attacked the baseball.  Had an Exit Velocity of 82 mph.  In the field, threw from a high ¾ arm slot with a short arm action that was accurate and had some life.  Footwork was methodical at times as he played through the ball.  Showed average hands with long, clean exchanges.  Showed slight above average arm strength with a Positional Velocity of 82 mph.

+Matt Brubaker, OF/RHP, Fairfax, 2017
Hit from an athletic/balanced stance with flexed knees.  Slight load back. Short stride with a slight leg kick.  Stayed on line with balance throughout.  Good approach during the session with a quiet rhythm that is fluid.  Short, level bat path and has extension.  Line drive stroke that is gap-gap.  Good hands.  Had an Exit Velocity of 83 mph.  in the field, throw from a high ¾ arm slot with a long, loose arm action that was accurate.  Footwork and exchanges were methodical and stiff at times.  Hands were average.  Hand a Positional Velocity of 78 mph.

+Jack Chenault, OF, Hanover, 2018
Hit from a balanced/athletic stance with a strong base.  Has a small load back with a short stride.  Balance throughout the swing.  Solid approach during the round with slightly stiff rhythm.  Short, level path to the ball with extension.  Line drive/gap-gap swing.  Had an Exit Velocity of 77 mph.  In the field, threw from an over the top arm action that was long and loose.  Throws had carry and were accurate.  Had athletic actions and played through the ball.  Footwork was clean and athletic.  Had exchanges that were clean and quick.  Moved well.  Advanced actions for age.  Had an above average Positional Velocity of 81 mph.

+Jack Darden, OF, Smithfield, 2017
Hit from a tall stance with knees inside of feet, flexed.  Loaded back with a slight arm bar and a slight wrap.  Took a short stride, stayed on line, with balance.  Had an explosive lower half and explosive hands.  Good approach during the round.  Had an uphill swing with pull power potential.  Had an Elite Exit Velocity of 92 mph.  In the field, threw from a ¾ arm slot with long, somewhat stiff arm action that was accurate.  Actions were a bit stiff.  Worked through the ball and had long exchanges.  Had average hands and methodical footwork.  Could quicken up.  Had a Positional Velocity of 76 mph.

+Derek Domecq, OF/LHP, Western Albemarle, 2018
Hit from a balanced stance that was open.  Had a smooth load back.  Took a short stride that was on line.  Had balance throughout the swing and a fluid rhythm.  Exuded confidence during the round. Had a short, level bat path that sometimes was in and out of the zone.  Gap-Gap stroke with power potential.  Had an Exit Velocity of 83 mph.  In the field, threw from a high ¾ arm slot with long, loose arm action with an explosive finish.  Throws were accurate and had life.  had athletic actions in the field and played through the ball.  Exchanges were clean.  Footwork was both quick and fluid.  Moved well.  Was able to use the glove well.  Had an above average arm for age with a Positional Velocity of 82 mph.

+Dallas Jackson, OF, Lee-Davis, 2017
Hit from an athletic stance with high hands.  Had a smooth load back with a short stride and balance.  Took a good approach during the round with fluid rhythm.  Short/level path to the ball with a line drive stroke.  Had an Exit Velocity of 73 mph.  In the field, threw from a high ¾ arm action that was long.  Sets the arm a bit.  Throws were accurate and had carry.  Had athletic actions and played through the ball.  Footwork was fluid and exchanges were clean.  Looked the part.  Had soft hands.  Had a Positional Velocity of 79 mph.

+Jake Jansen, OF, Patriot, 2017
Hit from an athletic/balanced stance.  Has a minimal load that was smooth.  Short stride (tap step) and stayed on line.  Good approach at the plate with a somewhat stiff/methodical rhythm.  Short, level path to the ball with a line drive stroke.  Had an Exit Velocity of 80 mph.  In the field, threw from a high ¾ arm slot with a long loose arm action.  Throws were accurate and had carry.  Plus athlete that played through the ball.  Exchanges were clean and quick.  Good footwork with fluidity and showed soft hands.  Moves very well.  Had a Positional Velocity of 79 mph.

+Ben Kimberlin, OF, Osbourn Park, 2017
Hit from a balanced stance with high, active hands.  Had a slight arm bar and dropped his hands in his load.  Took a short stride that was on line and showed balance throughout the swing.  Good approach during the session.  Had a level path to the ball that had some length.  Line drive stroke.  Had an Exit Velocity of 76 mph. In the field, threw from high ¾ arm slot that is long and loose that is slow at times.  Throws are accurate.  Plays through the ball with clean exchanges that were long.  Had fluid footwork and showed soft hands.  Had a Positional Velocity of 66 mph.

+Kaleb Marshall, OF/C, Orange, 2017
Hit from a balanced stance.  Had a smooth load with a slight arm bar.  Dropped hands.  Short stride with balance throughout the swing.  Took a good approach during the round and had a somewhat stiff rhythm.  Level bat path to the ball that had some length.  Line drive stroke that over time will be more gap-gap.  Had an Exit Velocity of 79 mph.  In the field, threw from a high ¾ arm slot with a short arm action.  Throws were accurate and had some carry.  Allowed the ball to get deep in his fielding stance.  Exchanges and footwork were very methodical.  Showed average hands.  Had a Positional Velocity of 78 mph.

+Ricky McCleod, OF/LHP, King’s Fork, 2017
Hit from tall/athletic stance that was slightly closed.  Showed a slight arm bar in his load.  Took a short stride that was balanced.  Had a good approach during the round with fluid rhythm that was too early at times.  Had an uphill bat path with extension.  Dominant to the pull side.  Had an Exit Velocity of 73 mph.  In the field, threw from a high ¾ arm slot with a long arm action.  Throws were accurate.  Playe through the ball with clean exchanges that were methodical.  Had average hands.  Footwork was fluid and methodical.  Had a Positional Velocity of 76 mph.

+Sean McQuillan, OF, Green Hope (NC), 2017
Hit from a balanced/athletic stance.  Dropped his hands in his load.  Had a minimal stride that was on line and had balance in the swing.  Had a good approach during the round with a somewhat choppy rhythm.  Had a short, level path to the baseball.  Line drive/gap-to-gap stroke with power potential.  Hand an Exit Velocity of 81 mph.  In the field, threw from an over the top arm slot with a long/slow arm action.  Throws were accurate and had some carry.  Was very deliberate with his actions.  Played through the ball.  Clean, methodical exchanges.  Footwork was fluid but deliberate.  Showed average hands.  Had a Positional Velocity of 78 mph.

+Scott Morgan, OF, Woodbridge, 2017
Hit from a tall and athletic stance.  Smooth load back with a leg kick and short stride.  Stayed on line and balanced throughout.  Had presence with a great approach and fluid rhythm.  Took a short path to the ball with extension.  Line drive/gap-to-gap stroke with power potential.  Hands could be electric in the near future.  Han an Exit Velocity of 87 mph.  In the field, threw from an over the top arm slot with a long loose arm action.  Throws had carry and were accurate.  Had good actions.  Played through the baseball and had clean and quick exchanges.  Footwork was quick but choppy at times.  Had a Positional Velocity of 81 mph.

+Ronald Payne, OF/LHP, William Monroe, 2017
Hit from a balanced stance that was a bit wide.  Minimal load back with a slight arm bar.  Took a small stride and maintained balance throughout the swing.  Had a good approach on the day and a fluid rhythm that was quiet.  Had a short, level bath path and had extension.  Showed good hands and feel for the barrel.  Line drive stroke.  Had an Exit Velocity of 79 mph.  In the field, threw from a over the top arm slot with a long loose arm action. Throws were accurate and had carry.  Played through the ball.  Good actions.  Exchanges were clean and footwork was fluid.  Moves well.  Showed soft hands and body control.  Had a Positional Velocity of 77 mph.


+Eric Poff, OF, Great Bridge, 2018
Hit from a balanced/athletic stance that was tall.  Brought the hands back, creating a slight arm bar in the load.  Took a short stride and stayed on line with balance.  Had a good approach with a somewhat stiff rhythm.  Short, level bat path with a line drive stroke.  Has leverage.  Had an Exit Velocity of 80 mph.  In the field, threw from a over the top arm slot with a long loose arm action.  Played through the ball.  Exchanges were both clean and quick.  Had fluid footwork.  Moved feet well.  Showed soft hands.  Had a Positional Velocity of 72 mph.  

+Stephen Strout, OF, Woodside, OF/RHP, 2018
Hit from an athletic stance.  Has a slight arm bar.  Tendency to over stride but stayed on line and was balanced.  Had a good approach with a somewhat stiff rhythm.  Showed a level bat path that had some length.  Line drive stroke.  Had a Exit Velocity of 74 mph.  In the field, threw from a over the top arm slot with a short arm action.  Throws were accurate and had carry.  Was athletic and played through the ball.  Everything was quick.  Fast twitch.  Exchanges were clean.  Footwork was fluid.  Fast actions.  Had a Positional Velocity of 78 mph.

+Matt Sykes, OF/LHP, The Covenant School, 2018
Hit from a balanced stance with flex in the knees.  Slight arm bar in load which is straight back.  Takes a short stride and has a leg kick.  Took a good approach during the round and had stiff rhythm.  Had a short bath path that was in and out of the zone.  Line drive stroke when on line.  Hands drag through the zone from time to time.  Had an Exit Velocity of 75 mph.  In the field, threw from a high ¾ arm slot with a short arm action.  Throws were accurate.  Allowed the ball to get deep in his stance when fielding.  Exchanges and footwork were deliberate.  Showed average hands.  Had a Positional Velocity of 72 mph.

+Colin Verberg, OF, C.D. Hylton, 2017
Hit from a balanced stance with flex in the knees.  Had a simple load back that was smooth.  Took a short stride and stayed on line with balance.  Had a good approach during the session with fluid rhythm.  Short bat path that was level.  Line drive stroke that will become more gap-gap on the future.  Strong hands.  Hands an Exit Velocity of 85 mph.  In the field, threw from an over the top arm slot with a long and somewhat stiff arm action.  Throws were accurate and had some carry.  Was a bit stiff fielding the ball.  Very deliberate actions.  Showed average hands.  Han a Positional Velocity of 74 mph.
