Unsigned Senior Spotlight: Steven Powell Jr., C/1B, Rockford HS, 2013

Steven Powell Jr., C/1B, Rockford, 2013

Today's unsigned senior spotlight focuses on Steven Powell from Rockford HS. Rockford has turned into a baseball powerhouse the past few years, including winning a state title in 2011.  They play in strong conference with the likes of 2012 state champion Hudsonville. Last season it was easy to be overlooked on the Rockford roster with a number of players like Shain Showers (Evansville), Tony DiLeo (Eastern Michigan, Kory Young (Michigan State).  But Powell should get some looks very shortly.

Powell is a strong athlete and he certainly does not get cheated at the plate.  He used his stronger lower half extremely well behind the plate and at the plate and threw consistent 2.07 pop times. From a hitting perspective, he had explosive bat speed that clocked in at a showcase best 90 mph.  He certainly has good power.  In the infield, he worked out at first base and showed he was sure handed and moved well around the bag.

Additionally Powell is a strong student consistently making the Dean's list several times throughout high school.
