Unsigned Senior Spotlight: Trinity RHP Erik Cecil

Prior to August 2, Erik Cecil  was unknown to us. The 6-foot-1, 223-pound RHP from Trinity HS in Louisville just got back on the mound this past spring after rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. Given his performance at two recent events, I’d say he is well on his way back.

Cecil participated in our Kentucky College Prospect Showcase at Bellarmine and turned a few heads when his first fastball of the day registered at 85 mph. He proceeded to throw every fastball in his bullpen session at 84-85 while showing a slurvy-type breaking ball at 66-68 mph to go along with a solid low-70’s changeup.

Fast forward a week, where at the Unsigned Senior Games event at Northern Kentucky University, Cecil turned in one of the more impressive performances of the event. Working from a ¾ arm slot, his fastball showed some arm-side life at 84-87 mph and touched 88 on one occasion. Cecil’s 68-72 mph breaking ball showed some inconsistency with some showing slurvy-type action, and some showing more depth, but it has tight rotation with the potential to be a solid pitch at the next level. His 75-77 mph changeup is thrown with good arm action and mirrors the action of his fastball with good deception. Cecil allowed one single, walked one, and struck out four (all on fastballs) in his two innings of work at the event
