Updated 2016 Colorado Rankings

John Cackowski
State Director

In the fall of 2014 PBR Colorado released their first 2015, 2016, and 2017 rankings. After scouting numerous games this spring, summer, and fall and putting together three awesome events with the Preseason All-State Event, the Junior Sunbelt Classic Tryout, and our Unsigned Senior Games where each event had the best 2016 players in the state participating, we have jumped our 2016 rankings from 150 to 200. This is our first ranking update since November 2014. Our next update will be towards the end of the spring season.

Staying at No.1 is RHP and North Carolina Commit Bo Weiss of Regis Jesuit HS. Weiss also plays for Slammers in the summer and fall.   Weiss has had a recent run of domination since last July. His fastball has increased to a consistency of 92 mph, and recently has touched 94 in the World Wood Bat Championships in Jupiter, FL. Weiss has been showing arm-side life at times. His curveball was mostly soft, sitting in the low 70s, but it flashed sharpness and good 11/5 shape at 73. Weiss’ best secondary pitch has been his changeup, which he shows good feel for. It features arm-side run and looked like a fastball out of his hand, sitting at 80-81. Recently at a scrimmage Weiss was consistently 91 mph to start the season.

Moving up to No 2. in our Rankings is Jake Eissler of ThunderRidge and Texas Christian Commit. Eissler also plays for Slammers Baseball in the summer. A 6-foot-2, 210-pound right hand hitting RHP/3B.  Balanced at the plate with little wasted movement.  Swing path is slightly uphill creating a ball with good carry.  Good extension out front at contact and strong lower leg drive creates an exit velocity of 93 MPH.  In the field he is athletic and moves well to the ball.  He shows good actions and transfer and delivers from along over the top arm slot.  He showcased a 93 MPH arm with accuracy at the Preseason Al-State event on 2-28. Eissler also was invited to the Super 60 and showed well throwing consistently 88 mph. Change-up was 75-76 mph and Curve ball was 73. Threw all three for strikes

Moving down to No. 3 in the 2016 class, and No. 28 overall is Paul Tillotson of Lewis Palmer High School, and also plays for Slammers Baseball in the summer and fall. Tillotson is committed to Nebraska, the 6-foot-2, 200-pound, right-handed pitcher was a one man wrecking crew in 2015.  Tillotson displays a smooth tall and fall motion with level shoulders and square athletic landing throwing off two feet and repeats delivery time after time.  Arm is long and loose, lightning quick from an over the top slot.  Easy effort produces fastballs from 90-91 MPH with hard run late in the zone.  Command is excellent in the bottom half of the zone.  Has a 68-72 MPH curve with 11/5 action and sharp late movement down in the zone.  Split Change is 74-75 MPH with good sink down in the zone. Tillotson has some back issues during the winter but is now good to go.

Coming in at No. 4 is Stanford recruit, C Maverick Handley of Mullen HS. Handley also plays for Slammers Baseball in the summer and fall 5-foot-10, 210-pound frame, physically mature, strong lower half, wider shoulders. Athletic feet, directional footwork with quick release; athleticism shows in 7.24 laser-timed 60. On-line throws with carry, 80 mph from the crouch, some effort involved. Recorded top pop times of 1.86, 1.89, 1.93. Advanced receiver with soft hands and flexible hips. Offensively, hits from slightly open setup, short stride to get square, quiet mechanics, minimal head movement; strong hands. Short direct path, short finish through contact; gap approach. Recorded 89 mph exit velocity. Showed well at the prestigious Super 60 event.

Coming in at No. 5 is Grand Canyon commit OF Quin Cotton of Regis Jesuit. Cotton was invited to the Super 60 and showed well at the event touching 101 on his exit velo, one of the top marks at the prestigious event. Cotton has gotten stronger and a little thicker which could be a reason his 60 time is down a little from the sub 7 times we have seen earlier, but it is showing in his advanced bat speed. At 5-foot-11, 190-pound right hand hitting outfielder ran a 7.00 laser timed 60 at the Super 60.  Narrow stance at the plate with a long stride on the pitch.  Displays quick hands and a level path through the ball.  Ball had good carry and left the yard repeatedly during the live round. In the field he is quick to balls in the gap and fields through ground balls well.  Showcased an above average arm at 85 MPH with good accuracy to the bag.
