Updated Class of 2016 Rankings

It’s been awhile since the Class of 2016 rankings were updated, and not surprisingly, much has changed as many players have shown big improvements and development in their game while others have emerged. While much of the top ten looks the same, there still are a few new additions and shakeups at the top with even more movement outside the top ten.

Cameron Planck remains at the top of the class. The Rowan County right-hander runs his fastball into the low-90’s, but the pitch that separates Planck from others in the class is his low-80’s slider. It’s a college-ready pitch and one that will bode well at the next level for the 6-foot-4, 200-pound Louisville recruit.

Easton McGee holds in the No. 2 spot after another impressive summer at top national events. McGee pitched well at the East Coast Pro Showcase with PBR National Supervisor Nathan Rode in attendance. The 6-foot-6, 200-pound right-hander ran his fastball up to 91 mph while only throwing a few breaking balls in his 2.2 innings of work. McGee’s delivery is effortless, and the upside is obvious for the Kentucky recruit.

Jaren Shelby moves up to No. 3 after a big summer saw him receive invites to a few top national events. Some scouts consider there to be some rawness still in the swing, but he possesses quick hands and good power. Not a burner, he is an above average runner with good athleticism and arm strength in the outfield. Shelby, whose brother Javon plays at Kentucky, is uncommitted but currently weighing offers.

Logan Wyatt moves up a few spots to No. 4. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound left-handed hitter put on an impressive display of power in launching 12 doubles and 11 home runs with 53 RBI this past spring in leading North Bullitt to a State Quarterfinal appearance. Those numbers represented a big jump in extra base hits for Wyatt from his sophomore season as he established himself as the premier left-handed power bat in the state.

Daniel Fischer makes a big jump to round out the top five. Fischer attended the Top Prospect Games last summer where he had a solid outing while displaying an 81-83 mph fastball. We expected to see a velocity jump out of the 6-foot-3, 180-pound right-hander, and that came in a big way this summer as  Fischer routinely pitched in the high-80’s while reportedly running his fastball up to 91 mph.

Illinois transfer Jake Snider lands in the top ten at No. 9. The second baseman has transferred to Ballard HS for his senior year and was widely regarded as one of the top left-handed hitters in Illinois. Snider was ranked No. 12 in Illinois’ 2016 class before transferring and is committed to Louisville.

Hunter Sullivan drops to No. 10 mostly due to rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. The Elizabethtown right-hander’s fastball topped at 91 mph at the 2014 PBR Future Games, but his junior campaign was cut short by the injury. Assuming the rehab goes without any setbacks, Sullivan should be back on the mound this coming spring.
