Updated Illinois Power 25 Team Rankings

This is the ninth and last installment of the Illinois Power 25 Team Rankings until the state playoffs conclude in the middle of June. Brother Rice sports a 34-3 record and remains at No. 1 for the fifth straight week.

The final four teams are set in Class 1A and 2A. The state finals for both classes get underway this Friday at O’Brien Field in Peoria. Class 3A/4A Region Champions have been crowned and Sectional Semifinals start tomorrow around the state. 23 of the 25 teams in the Power 25 are still alive in the postseason.

Below is a breakdown of the movement in this week’s Power 25:

Climbing

+ Prairie Ridge (31-6) – Continued to stay hot this week going 3-0 and have now won 21 of their last 22 games. The 4A Wolves face Huntley on Wednesday for a spot in the Huntley Sectional Final.

+ Providence (28-9) – The Celtics are primed for a record, third consecutive state championship. They went 3-0 on the week and the pitching staff, allowed three runs in the three wins. Providence faces Lincoln-Way East on Thursday in the Providence Sectional Semifinal.

+ Waterloo (23-6) – The top ranked 3A squad comes in at No. 12. Went 3-0 on the week including an 8-3 win over No. 13 Edwardsville. Waterloo faces Marion on Wednesday in the Troy (Triad) Sectional Semifinal.

+ St. Joseph-Ogden (34-3) – Yesterday, punched their ticket to the 2A State Final for the first time in school history, with an 11-0 win over Beardstown. The Spartans have won 21 games in a row. They face Murphysboro in the 2A State Semifinal on Friday at 3:00 pm.

+ Wauconda (27-4) – Went 2-0 on the week including a Regional Final victory over Johnsburg. Wauconda faces St. Viator on Wednesday in the St. Viator Sectional Semifinal. Senior, right-handed pitcher, Kevin Malisheski, an Illinois State recruit is back from an ACL injury and will add another weapon on the mound for the Bulldogs.

+ Sacred Heart-Griffin (28-7) – Rose four spots up to No. 16 after a 3-0 week including a 6-2 win over No. 3 O’Fallon. The Cyclones take on Champaign Centennial on Wednesday at 7:00 pm.

+ Carmel Catholic (23-9) – Jumped into the Top 20 after a 3-0 week. The Corsairs scored 28 runs in their three games this week. Carmel faces Lakes on Thursday at 4:00 pm for a spot in the St. Viator Supersectional Final.

+ Rockford Christian (32-4) – Last year’s 2A state champion is now in Class 3A but it does not seem to be slowing them down. In three wins this week they outscored their opponents 22-2. Rockford Christian faces Marmion Academy on Wednesday in the Rochelle Sectional Semifinals.

+ Champaign Central (28-9) – Jumped four spots and now sit in the Top 20 after a 2-0 week, including a 5-2 win over Mt. Zion in the Regional Final. The Maroons match up with Springfield on Wednesday in the Springfield Sectional.

+ Springfield (30-5) – A surprising 30 win season and a Sectional appearance have the Senators at No. 20 in the Power Rankings. Springfield knocked off Rochester 11-7 to win the Springfield (Lanphier) Regional.

Sinking

+ Edwardsville (29-8) – Lost 8-4 to Belleville West in the Regional Semifinals. An earlier than expected exit for the Tigers who won 29 games on the year.

+ Hinsdale South (29-5) – Went 1-2 on the week and lost 10-2 to Downers Grove North in the Regional Semifinal.

New to the Top 25

+ Mundelein (27-9) – Jumps in the Power Rankings at No. 21 after an impressive 3-0 week. Defeated Libertyville 3-1 to win the Region Championship.

+ Lemont (25-9) – Rolled in the Joliet Catholic Regional outscoring their two opponents 23-3. They matchup with Morgan Park in the Lincoln-Way West Sectional Semifinal on Wednesday.

+ Champaign Centennial (26-8) – Jumped into the Power 25 for the first time this year. Defeated Mahomet-Seymour 4-2 to take the Mattoon Region Championship.

+ Reed-Custer (27-5) – Led by left-handed ace Brent Headrick, the Comets advanced to the 2A State Finals with little trouble. Headrick struck out 17 in Monday’s, complete game, 5-0 victory over Depaul College Prep.
