This spring we take a different approach to the unveiling of our Preseason Power25 teams across the commonwealth/DC. Instead of one full release, we will be doing a countdown starting today and running all the way to the beginning of the high school season. Over the course of the next 2.5 weeks, we will be counting down our preseason top 25.

VA/DC Preseason Power25: No. 14 - Collegiate Cougars

Preseason Rank: 14
Level: VISAA Division I
Head Coach: Andrew Slater (11th Season)
2018: 16-7 Lost in VISAA State Semifinals

Top Players

aTrey Boll OF/LHP 2020 (Virginia)
Michael Stewart RHP 2020 (James Madison)
Nigel Williams SS 2020
Lew Rice C 2020 (pictured, right)

X-Factor

Trey Boll OF/LHP - The Cougars are going to need to fill up for some time lost from their all everythign player from last season, Travis Reifsnider. Boll has the tools that he could be the player to take that role with his ability both on the mound and at the plate. His athleticism, clean and lively arm along with his left-handed bat should play well for the Cougars in his junior season.

Outlook

The Cougars have a nice core of players back that were a big part of their state semifinal run from last year and more than likely will be in contention yet again this spring. Offensively they have a solid core of 2020's who should be big pieces on the offense. The aforementioned Boll, Nigel Williams and Lew Rice will all be mainstays at the top of the order for the Cougars. Williams should bring the speed and ability to get on base at the op while Rice shows an explosive swing that will threaten to add a run every time at the plate while Boll has the potential to bring a potent bat with some pop and ability to hit for average. Keep an eye out for 2021 Donovan Williams this season as he more than likely will see an expanded role and he shows the ability to be a nice contributor on the offensive end from the outfield position.

On the mound, the Cougars will be paced by ace Michael Stewart (James Madison) who really came into his own last season with his 2.12 ERA in 52.2 Innings last season. Stewart will again be their big game guy this season and will give them a chance to win each time out. The question is going to be who will emerge as the No.2 in the rotation. Boll has the ability to do so while Rice could also see some time on the mound along with Will Hutchins. you could also see more innings out of 2021 Heth Alexander, who should build off his freshman campaign.

Some high end talent on the roster along with the Cougars constant ability to perform well in pressure situations is why we see another strong spring from them and they get the nod as our No. 14 team in the state.
