This spring we take a different approach to the unveiling of our Preseason Power25 teams across the commonwealth/DC. Instead of one full release, we will be doing a countdown starting today and running all the way to the beginning of the high school season. Over the course of the next 2.5 weeks, we will be counting down our preseason top 25.

VA/DC Preseason Power25: No. 6 - Mills Godwin

Preseason Rank: 6
Level: VHSL Class 5 Region B
Head Coach: John Fletcher
2018: 16-4, lost in Region 5B Quarterfinals

Top Players

aNoah Cornwell 1B 2019 (James Madison)
Liam Deegan C/CIF 2019 (Virginia)
Bryce Safferwich SS 2020 (James Madison)
Spencer Rife RHP 2019 (Randolph-Macon, pictured)
Sam Landess LHP 2019 (James Madison)

X-Factor

Noah Berringer OF 2019 -  Berringer should man the top of the order again this 2019 season for the Eagles and will play an important role. If he can consistently get in scoring position for the big hitters in this deep lineup, that will lead to a lot of Eagle runs this season.

Key Players Lost

Scott McDonough

Outlook

The Eagles will have one of the most talented and most experienced teams in the Commonwealth this spring. That talent could be part of the makings of a big 2019 for Godwin in their quest to return to the state tournament in the very tough Region B of Class 5 of the VHSL.

The Eagles have a talented offense returning this spring with Noah Cornwell being the ringleader in the middle of the lineup. The James Madison recruit shows power potential at the plate and could put up some impressive numbers this spring. Not to be outdone, the Eagles will also have Liam Deegan and his power ability as well making for a tough two in the heart of the order. Godwin has plenty to choose from when setting their lineup, with Mark Buisson, Noah Berringer (Hampden-Sydney), Sam Essex (Christopher Newport), Bo Richmond (WV Wesleyan), Braxton Downum (VA Wesleyan), and Safferwich all surrounding those big hitters and making for a tough lineup to face. Buisson had a nice year last season hitting in the top of the order the majority of the year and that should be repeated in 2019. Richmond and Downum could add nice depth to the order this season and could see their role expand this spring.

On the mound, the eagles have nice depth with a new look and more than capable 1-2 combo in RHP Spencer Rife and LHP Sam Landess. Landess was a top reliever and late inning guy and should do well if moved to a starter role. Some questions do remain about the rest of the depth on the pitching staff. Two contenders to see expanded roles this spring include Jacob Vernon and Mason McRae.

Deep talent on the offensive end plus two frontline arms lead us to believe it could be a good year for the Eagles this spring and that is why they get our nod at No. 6 in the Preseason Power25.
