The William Byrd Terriers took the lead in the bottom of a three run fifth inning to take the lead for good as they upset the No. 8 ranked team in the VA/DC Power25 rankings Salem, 8-6.

Not the cleanest of games and a very much back and forth affair between these two rivals, the visitors from Salem would strike first scoring one run after a bases loaded hit by pitch to give the Spartans and early 1-0 lead. Byrd would strike back in the second after a big double to left-center off the bat of 2020 Ethan Spraker that was just out of the reach of Spartans speedy centerfielder, Parker Stallard

Salem would immediately strike back in the third after a double from Stallard that scored Zac Honaker, who led the inning off with a walk. Stallard would then score on a squeeze bunt to give the Spartans a 3-1 lead. Byrd again came back with two of their own in the bottom half of the frame, taking advantage of two Salem errors to tie the score yet again.

Salem would benefit from two Byrd errors in the top of the fourth to get three runs and take a lead that looked like might be the separator in the game. Byrd added one in the fourth to close the lead. However, in the fifth inning, Isaac Fix led off the frame with a deep drive to left center just out of the leftfielders graspe for a double to start the inning. Jacob Johnson would immediately drive in Fix on a signle to right field to cut the Salem lead to two. Salem would then proceed to cimmit three errors during the next two hitters that would lead to two more runs for the Terriers.

William Byrd would tack on one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning and hold the Spartan scoreless through the final two to hold on to the 8-6 victory.

As stated earlier, the game was not the cleanest of contests as both teams accounted for 11 errors in the game.

Spracker led the terriers with three hits on the day and Johnson had two hits as well.
