The Colorado Top Prospect Games took place on Saturday August 16th and Sunday August 17th, at Cherry Creek High School in Greenwood Village, CO. This year’s event featured several talented, uncommitted players in Colorado’s 2015 through 2018 classes. In our next positional analysis we will take a look at the top first baseman. Highlands Ranch John Mallon takes home top honors showing legit gap to gap power, and soft hands at first base.
Here’s a look at the top third base prospects at this year’s Colorado Top Prospect Games:
1. John Mallon,1B, Highlands Ranch, 2015
6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed hitting first baseman has an strong athletic, projectable frame. Hits from a tall, open setup, hands load back smoothly, utilizes a short stride that he closes down before ball enters hitting zone. Swing is fast through the zone producing uphill bat path spraying line drives from gap-to-gap producing 85 mph exit velocity off the tee. During batting practice hit two off the wall and was only player to hit home run on the big Cherry Creek field. When he learns to keep hands back on off-speed during game like he does during batting practice power numbers and batting average will jump. Defensively, has a plus frame for first base and shows soft hands with ability to pick balls out of dirt. Mallon threw 77 mph across the diamond from first to third. Ran a 7.41 60.
2. Trevor Wilson, 1B, Lakewood High School, 2016
6-foot-1, 215-pound right-handed hitting first baseman hits from a closed, balanced setup, and dives out with his stride. His hands are positioned low and loads in an upward path. He has a short path to the ball with extension that produces line drives at 83 mph exit velocity that go gap to gap but swing tends to favor right field. Has some good power potential. Defensively at first base, threw 67 mph across the diamond with accuracy from short, high ¾ arm action. He would add more velocity if he closes is front side down as he tends to open up front hip before he throws. Ran a 8.50 60.
3. Kevin Ball, 1B, Highlands Ranch, 2017
6-foot-3, 170-pound right-handed hitting third baseman and right handed pitcher hits from a balanced setup, hands load smoothly, stride is short, hands stay quiet pre-pitch, with short, uphill batpath producing line drives from gap-to-gap with 82 mph exit velocity. Does a good job of utilizing lower half in his swing. Defensively, stays low fielding the baseball showcasing average hands, throws 71 mph across the diamond from a short, high ¾ arm slot with accuracy. Ran 7.30 60 yard dash, 5.04 from home to first. With size at his age a player to follow next few years.
