Commitment Spotlight: Ty Nelson

Brett Thorney
State Scouting Director

Today, We had the pleasure of catching up with 2021 SS Ty Nelson of Saguaro High School to ask him a few questions about his college recruiting experience. Eyes have been on Nelson over the course of the fall season as one of top MINF's left on the board. He recently attended our Uncommitted Upperclass Showcase where the same was true. However, we can now take his name off the list of uncommitted shortstops as Nelson recently made a commitment to Paradise Valley CC to further his baseball career. Above Nelson's physical tools, the way he plays the game can be greatly appreciated. He consistently plays the game with energy and hop in his step, leading by example. Hes the type of player that contribute even when he's not in the game. Nelson sports a lean athletic 5-foot-10 180-pound frame with strong legs. He has gotten stronger since he attended our event in January and it shows the plate where he displays improved pop off the bat, recording 96mph exit velocities via Trackman. Nelson's defense has always been a strong attribute, showing soft twitchy hands with a quick exchange and release. Recently, he made sure to show off his arm strength at our Uncommitted Showcase, letting it go with accuracy at 87mph across the diamond. His speed doesn't always impress but plays the game with some quickness and good instincts that makes up it. Congrats to Ty Nelson on his commitment to Paradise Valley.

Scouting Report

1/26/20

5-foot-10 165-pound, lean compact build with strong legs & forearms. More athleticism than 7.65 60-yard dash would suggest, plays faster. Gamer type of mentality that plays the game with high energy. Hits from an athletic spread out base. Uses a quick leg lift to create leverage, landing hard on front foot. Hands get to a good launch position with level swing. Some extra movements throughout the process. Middle approach with above average contact at 83mph. Showed above average actions defensively with soft twitchy hands. Gets rid of the ball quickly with short arm action at 76mph. More arm strength there. High baseball IQ. Development should be followed.
