With two outs and runners on first and third, Trenton Brehm delivered the game-winning hit to punch Papillion La-Vista South’s ticket to the winner’s bracket on Sunday night.

The fifth inning began with a throwing error from Kutty George who overshot Brent Thorell, injecting life into the Titans’ dugout. A fielder’s choice and a bunt single moved Austin Denhoed to third, as he eventually scored on the hit from Brehm.

Both teams got phenomenal outings from their starting pitchers who went shot-for-shot until the Titans broke the tie in the fifth. Nick Ripple for PLVS threw a complete-game shutout, only allowing four hits all game with only three runners reaching scoring position.

Ripple threw only 73 pitches during his outing, getting ahead of 23 of the 27 batters he faced during the game. Four of his seven frames were innings in which Westside hitters were retired in order, working quickly to get Papio South off the field.

Defense was elite in this low-scoring affair, as there were three double plays turned from both teams combined. A diving catch in left field by Evan Greene to strand a runner on third, brought a fitting conclusion to a game rooted on spectacular defensive play. Neither team recorded an extra-base hit with the stout defense saving several big hits.

On the mound for Westside was Ty Madison who went all six innings for the Warriors, allowing just four hits and one earned run. He struck out five hitters and kept a struggling Westside offense in the game all the way until the final out. RJ Gunderson was the only real offensive standout for Westside as he finished with a two-hit game.

Papillion La-Vista South advances to take on Gretna at 7:00 p.m., while Westside will take on Bellevue West at 1:00 p.m. at Westside High School.
