Indiana Wesleyan Unsigned Senior Showcase Results: Top 10 Unsigned Seniors



On February 20th, Prep Baseball Report Indiana hosted the Unsigned Senior Showcase at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana.  The event consisted of 39 unsigned seniors from Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, and even Canada.  Here is a look at the Top 10 unsigned seniors from the event (all other player results to follow later this week).

1.  Cody Gardner, SS/3B, Terre Haute North HS:  Gardner is a 5-foot-11 inch, 180 pound senior from Terre Haute North HS.  Gardner displays plus actions in the field at both 3B and SS.  His glove works and shows a strong arm across the diamond at 81 mph.  Despite not having great speed, Gardner still shows good footwork in the field with good range to both his left and right.  At the plate he shows quick hands and gets to extension well producing good barrel whip.  His swing is compact and uses his lower half well.  Gardner has the ability to hit for both power and average.

2.  Taylor Cooper, LHP, Defiance HS (OH):  Cooper is a 5-foot-9 inch, 154 pound senior from Defiance HS in Ohio.  Cooper works from a high ¾ arm slot with a clean delivery.  He possesses good timing and rhythm along with clean arm action.  His fastball sits at 84-87 mph with a natural cut.  Cooper throws two off speed pitches; a 67-70 mph 12/6 breaking ball with good depth and a 71-75 mph changeup.

3.  Daniel Marlow, SS/RHP, Terre Haute South HS:  Marlow is a 6-foot-2 inch, 180 pound senior from Terre Haute South HS.  This was Marlow’s third PBR event in the last 2 years.  From the field he shows a good glove with some range.  Across the diamond he is 76 mph.  At the plate he hits from the left side with an open stance.  He shows good balance throughout his swing and produces good pop with an uphill swing plane.  On the mound he possesses good arm action with an 81-84 mph fastball.  His breaking ball comes in at 70-73 and throws a changeup at 74-75 mph. 

4.  Connor Robinson, RHP, Guerin Catholic HS:  Robinson is a 6-foot-3 inch, 135 pound senior from Guerin Catholic HS.  Robinson possesses long limbs and works from a ¾ arm slot.  His fastball (79-83 mph) is deceptively quick with some arm side run.  Robinson shows a 72-75 mph changeup with good sink action.  Robinson’s 2nd off speed pitch is a 63-66 mph breaking ball.  Expect Robinson to increase his velocity when he adds more weight, as he has a projectable frame. 

5.  Trammel Grimmer, RHP, Hamilton Southeastern HS:  Grimmer is a 6-foot-6 inch, 240 pound senior from Hamilton Southeastern HS.  Grimmer shows a big, projectable body, and works primarily from the stretch.  From a high ¾ arm slot his fastball is 82-84 mph with a good downward plane and late life.  He shows a slider at 74-76 mph and a changeup at 75-78 mph. 

6.  Alex Arthur, C, Cascade HS:  Arthur is a 5-foot-10 inch, 180 pound senior from Cascade HS.  Behind the plate he shows good arm strength 76 mph.  He produced the best pop time at the event, a 1.96.  At the plate Arthur displays quick hands with a raw swing, but does show power potential.  Last year for Cascade Arthur hit .508 with 3 HR’s and 15 2B’s.

7.  John Hardwick, RHP, Perry Meridian HS:  Hardwick is a 6-foot-4 inch, 185 pound senior from Perry Meridian HS.  On the mound he shows a long, lean body with good timing and a fluid delivery.  From a high ¾ arm slot he throws a fastball at 79-81 mph.  Hardwick shows a 63-65 mph breaking ball that’s consistently down in the zone.  His changeup is 66-67 mph.

8.  Jon Keesling, RHP, Wapahani HS:  Keesling is a 6-foot-2 inch, 215 pound senior from Wapahani HS.  He works at a quick pace with a fastball at 79-82 mph with some are side run.  He shows an above average high school breaking ball at 67-69 mph.  His changeup is 73-74 mph changeup with late fade. 

9.  Cole Johnson, 1B/DH, Farmersburg HS:  Johnson is a 5-foot-10 inch, 190 pound senior from Farmersburg HS.  Johnson is an undersized first baseman that can hit at a high level from the left side.  He demonstrates a slightly open stance with a good approach.  At the plate he shows quick hands with the ability to barrel up the ball consistently.  He was rated the top hitter at the Unsigned Senior event.  Last year he hit .424 with 3 HR’s, 7 2B’s, and 30 walks for the class 1A State Runner-Up Farmersburg Thunderbirds.

10.  Trenton Chaney, 2B/OF, Pike HS:  Chaney is an athletic 5-foot-11, 165 pound senior from Pike HS.  From the field he shows quick hands and the ability to pick it well.  At the plate he shows a simple approach with a good base.  Chaney’s hands are extremely quick, and shows the ability to turn on most balls by getting to extension well.
