Inside the Rankings: 2023 Pitchers

Dan Cevette
President, New York

Over the course of the last 10 months, we have had the privilege of seeing-scouting thousands of NY players in all the graduating classes. As a result, we have started our "Updated Rankings" winter push for all classes - 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020.

The 2023 NY Player Rankings received the bulk of our attention over the last two weeks, and have seen their first rendition go live earlier this week. Over the course of the next few weeks we will be taking a deeper look inside the new 2023 rankings. This week, we take a look at five pitchers that found themselves creating well-earned "buzz" in our initial 2023 rankings.  why they are there, and a little bit about the player.

Casey Vaughn RHP / CBA - Syracuse , NY / 2023

Vaughn enters our 2023 Rankings at No. 3 - and it's for good reason. The build projects, standing 6-foot-1, 150-pounds with long lanky limbs. As I dive into the future, I can easily see Vaughn's frame at 6-foot-3, 190 when he's physically mature. The current mechanics are sound and repeatable, the arm-swing is longer in the back with no visible restrictions. He throws from a power 3/4 slot with plenty of hand-speed on the front side. The FB peaked 82 mph this summer and there's plenty more in the tank. He works with a CB/CH/Slider (backed up on him several times) with plenty of present hand-speed to develop those pitches. CNY product that we are excited to follow closely this February, spring and summer.

Aiden Milburn RHP / Baldwinsville, NY / 2023

Another CNY right-hand pitching prospect to keep eyes on is Aiden Milburn. Standing a burly 6-foot-0, 205-pounds, Milburn has the size and strength and feel on the mound to be a next-level prospect. The mechanics are compact and methodical, the arm-swing is long with easy low-effort velocity (79), ball jumps on the hitters late. The CB shows 12/6 shape, and the CH has proper arm-side fade. It's been almost a year since we saw the No. 11 ranked prospect in the 2023 class, so this February he could show big improvements from last year. We are excited to follow his progress.

Braden Davis RHP / Riverhead, NY / 2023

Davis, a two-way prospect, enters our 2023 Rankings at No. 13 and impressed me from the mound. The 5-foot-8, 145-pound prospect competes like he's going to war. Hard nosed, gritty type competitor that attacked every hitter he faced. The mechanics are clean, uses a slight pause before driving towards home, his direction is on the power-line, his arm-action is fluid and releases from a power 3/4 slot. FB peaked 79 mph displaying quick hand-speed out in front. Excited to see him this February as he continues to develop his game for the next-level.

Anthony Greco RHP /  St. Joes Collegiate Institute, NY / 2023

Greco enters the 2023 Rankings at No. 14 with plenty of room to climb as his 5-foot-10, 140-pound frame develops. On the mound he works from a wide base, short arm-swing with quick hand-speed out in front, FB peaked 78 mph with clear signs of more in the tank. During his performance back in July, Greco attacked hitters with an inside FB consistently, while keeping the ball down in the zone. He also showed the feel for an 11/5 shape curveball. Excited to see his growth this February and continue to follow him this spring/summer.

Elias Conway LHP / Columbia , NY / 2023

Currently No. 18 in the 2023 rankings, Conway stands 5-foot-10, 150-pounds and is one of my favorites from this Fall. High ceiling left-handed prospect from the greater Albany, NY area. The mechanics are compact and repeatable, the stride lands across his body creating deceptive arm-side tail. The arm-action is long and clean, the release point is high 3/4, and the feel for the strike zone is above average. FB peaked 77 mph with a lot more in the tank once his frame develops. Confident with a three pitch mix and showed the ability to throw hard-inside making the hitters uncomfortable in the box. I am excited to see him this February. My way-to-early sleeper pick in the 2023 rankings.
