Scouting Report
Currently ranked No. 1 in Louisiana’s 2020 class, No. 47 Overall. Athletic 6-foot-1, 195-pound frame with strength in wrists, and developed, powerful build. One of the premier right-handed hitting infield prospects in the country; only solidified his status with an all-around stellar performance. Finished the double-header 4-for-7 with three RBI, two runs scored, and blasted a loud home run to left field in game one. Hits from an athletic, slightly open setup with hands held above the shoulder; quiet and simple approach to the ball, leg lift stride, lands softly, fluid load, gets off backside well, maintains balance throughout; generates easy bat speed, stays strong thru the ball, high finish. Athletic defender, quick first step, feet and hands work together, quality actions, soft hands, quick and clean transfers; takes good angles, plays through the ball, stays under control, smooth and instinctive, plays with presence. Short arm action into high-3/4 release; quick release, plus arm strength, easy carry, follows throws, accurate. Average runner, better underway, instinctive on the bases; athleticism is evident, can stick at SS, but profiles to 3rd as he matures. Highly competitive, comes to play, confident, aggressive; has also been actively recruited in football as a quarterback.
Uncommitted, 6-foot-1, 185-pounder. He uses his loose wrists and strong hands to whip the barrel through the zone, and it lags for a long time. The ball screamed off his barrel at times, and he likely could have put on a show if he had turned it loose. A lot to like about the athleticism, and combined with his strength, he has a chance to be an elite prospect in the class
6/20/17 Uncommitted. 6-foot-1, 180-pound, strong, advanced frame for his class. Currently the No. 1 Ranked player in LA, and No. 53 Overall. Shapen ran a 6.98-second 60-yard dash on our watch. The right-handed hitter has an easy stride and advanced approach for his age, using the middle of the field during BP with hard contact. He has advanced, clean, easy actions at shortstop and moves with fluid footwork. Not often that a rising sophomore competes in the game at Area Code Tryouts but Shapen stood out even among players two years older. High ceiling and outstanding tool set.
5/4/17 Athletic 6-foot-2, 170-pound frame, high-waist, lean, strong build with projection. Premium defender with quality actions, soft hands, fluid footwork, and quick, clean exchanges. Short arm action into high-3/4 release with carry and accuracy on throws across. Right-handed hitter that hits from simple, athletic setup, short stride, and smooth load. Fluid rhythm with simple, direct, compact stroke and bat speed through the zone. Finished the day 2-for-3 with two singles.
