NW Futures Scout Day - Quick Hits - 2020 Grads

Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

Vancouver, WA - At the end of February we held a Scout Day event for the NW Futures baseball academy. Scout Days are designed to focus on the players within a specific organization while recording the same statistics, video and player information as an open registration event.

Pre-season events such as this provide players with the opportunity to build their profile with the most up-to-date information and video footage. All players in attendance receive an online profile with their verified statistics, player report, picture and video. Additionally, all subsequent stories written about a prospect will be linked to the player’s profile, ultimately creating a one-stop shop for recruiters.

Furthermore, the top players will be listed in our statewide player rankings and overall national rankings.

Let's take a quick look at the 2020 players who were in attendance.

quick hits - '20 grads

‘20 1B/RHP Eastyn Culp (Heritage, WA)
Long, lean frame at 6’3, 180. At the plate, hits from wide, square set-up with some weight pre-shifted onto back leg. Uses subtle hand load in rhythm with forward stride to create bat speed. Mostly line-drive contact throughout BP with a level, 2-handed finish. Defensively has sound footwork at both 1B/3B. Balanced actions with a soft glove hand. Clean, whippy arm with low ¾ release. Arm action translates well to the mound. Still some projection left as a RHP with his size, frame and loose arm. Showed feel for 3-pitch mix with quality CB/CH. Steady pace to throwing actions with aggressive finish thru release. Stays tall throughout with eyes on target. Could see jump in pure stuff with additional strength.

‘20 OF Tyler Forner (Camas, WA)
Strong, dynamic athlete at 5’11, 190 pounds. Tall, relaxed stance at the plate, slightly open with loose rhythm in hands. Shifts weight back with low, controlled leg lift. Short scap load in upper-half prior to swing. Creates above average bat speed while maintaining balance & posture. Plus runner who moves with fluid, powerful strides in the OF. Arm strength has shown improvement from this past summer. Works from a high ¾ release, creating significant momentum behind throw. Top uncommitted position player in WA at the moment.

‘20 OF Clint French (Camas, WA)
6’1, 155 pounds with a proportional frame and wiry build. Slightly open in the box with slight knee bend. Widens out into strong, more athletic base with hands near back shoulder. Barrel gets on plane then works thru contact on an uphill path. High finish with leverage from lower half. Smooth, active feet in the OF. Comes thru ball while funneling on his glove-side leg. Uses a side shuffle to align with target and create momentum on throw. ¾ release point with a full, continuous arm path. Measurables could see quick jump as he continues to get stronger.

‘20 OF Julien Jones (Washougal, WA)
Athletic frame at 6’1, 200 pounds with strength throughout. Sets up with narrow, upright stance and low, relaxed hands. Gets into forward move with a short leg kick. Hands stay close to body and let barrel work inside of the ball. Avoids getting long or disconnected. Creates easy bat speed. Size/strength combination profiles well to the OF. Moves easily as he gets behind the ball with short, controlled strides. Uses a quick step-behind as he turns glove side towards target and gets into throwing motion. Loose, full arm path with high ¾ release.

‘20 OF/LHP Cody Niblack (Battle Ground, WA)
5’8, 170 pounds. Proportionally built between upper & lower half. Stays tall with slightly open stance in the box. Lands square to pitcher with upright posture and slight knee bend. Barrel stays behind ball as he generates bat speed with full hip rotation. Stays balanced thru contact. In the OF, approaches ball from his glove side with hip hinge to work down and funnel ball in. Slight hop with side shuffle in lower half. Keeps ball high on exchange. Clean, loose arm action from high ¾ slot. On the mound, uses a mechanically sound, repeatable delivery. High leg lift with drop-and-drive action as he works down the slope. Full extension from glove side and throwing arm after hand break. High ¾ release. Stays behind, on top of the ball and keeps 3-pitch mix around the zone.

‘20 1B/RHP Riley Sinclar (Camas, WA)
6’4, 185 pounds with extra-wide, projectable frame. Balanced, relaxed stance at the plate. Barrel starts flat before loading into stronger hitting position during forward stride. Stays short/quick to the ball despite having to work with long levers. Hits against a firm front side with a level finish. Heads stays down thru contact. Defensively has quick, athletic feet around the bag. Handles glove hand well and stays low on the ball. Manipulates arm slot as needed. Currently has impressive stuff on the mound with the chance to improve even more down the road. Slower, deliberate throwing motion with an aggressive finish. Keeps everything under relaxed at landing & then uses controlled acceleration thru release. Avoids tensing up early. Full arm swing with quick path into release. Avoids wrapping or getting too long. Throws from ¾ release with consistent extension out over front side. One of the top RHP prospects in the state.
