New England Insider: Early Signing Period - Division 2 Recruiting Class Breakdown

The NCAA early signing period started November 8th, 2017 and ran through the 15th. With the fall signing period upon us, we look to break down each individual Division I commitment from in-state prospects, where they are headed and what tools they will bring with them.

Assumption

Overview: The coaching staff did a nice job of hovering over New England to nail down there recruiting class. They brought in 4 right-handed arms, 3 infielders, and two utility players. The signees are all quality and should be able to contribute immediately to the program. Justin Coppeta, Tommy Costa and Jake Hamel anchor the middle of the field signees. All 3 are capable of moving around and playing multiple positions. Nick Gaglioti and Connor Wironen give coach flexibility behind the dish and in the outfield. Both can play the outfield and Wironen can jump behind the dish if need be.

On the mound, Marc Metivier, Patrick Harrington, Mitchell Crory and Macguire O’Sullivan are all quality right-handed arms that should step in and pitch immediately. All 4 have loose arms and show upside as their velocities should jump in the coming years. Good solid class of signees.

Franklin Pierce

Overview: Franklin Pierce does it again, covering a great amount of area to sign the best possible group to help them maintain their winning ways. Rindge, New Hampshire has dawned a tremendous amount of talent in the last ten years.

This year they bring in 2 middle infielders, 2 corner infielders, 5 outfielders, 3 arms and a 2-way guy.

Graham Smith, Maxx St John, Ryan Lavelle, Rick Perry and Joey Lara lead the outfielder. All are versatile and provide depth at all outfield positions. Zach Landry and Randy Flores will anchor the middle for years to come. Landry can play shortstop but may thrive as an offensive second baseman. Flores is a true shortstop. Jake Miller and Hudson Pullin are corner infielder, third and first respectively. Miller adds athleticism and a solid bat to the fray. Kolby Lambert is the lone two-way player entering Franklin Pierce next fall, and he is a legit athlete. Interesting player to follow through college. 

On the mound, Dan Gracia, Connor Houle, Noah Reisenfeld and Zach Brundage round out the class. Gracia is a strike throwing right-hander and Houle is a low-80s left-handed with a slider.  Solid recruiting class.

Merrimack

Overview: The Merrimack coaches restocked the roster with their 2018 class. They have covered all areas of need, signing 4 right-handed pitchers and 1 left-handed arm. They bring in 2 catchers, 1 middle infielder, 1 outfielder and 2 Utility players.

On the mound, Sean Thompson is a long and lanky left-hander who has a huge ceiling for me. The ball comes out nicely and he can really pitch. Cedric Gillette, Brayden Howrigan, LT Pare and Turner Jamieson are all right-handers who’s best days are in front of them. Each of them have a chance to garner innings early in the freshman year.

Kurtis Stadnicki and Wyatt Villella are catchers who will compete for innings as freshman, both will be needed as a full season takes its toll on one catcher. Ben Nelson from Maine is the lone middle infielder, solid player who should develop nicely at Merrimack. Jack Lynch and Ian Hanson are versatile athletes who can bounce around to different positions. Michael Golankiewicz is the lone outfielder coming to Merrimack by way of New Jersey, his bat development will determine playing time.

Saint Anselm

Overview: Saint Anselms introduces a new class in 2018 as new head coach Nick Cenatiempo and his assistants were all over the New England region this summer and fall. They signed 5 arms in total, 2 catchers, both of which should be able to contribute immediately. They also signed 4 middle infielders, all athletic and versatile, allowing coach to move them around the diamond, as well as signing 3 corner infielders and 2 potential two-way guys.

Chris Schworer is a solid catch and throw defender with strength in the bat. He should be able to contribute immediately. Enzo Merlonghi is a catcher from Connecticut who can really catch and throw as well. The bat has plus life to it as well. Both the catchers are college ready.

Daniel Smucker, Will Fletcher, Mac Harris, Andrew Grygorcewicz and Shawn Morrow are all projectable right-handed arms who should contribute with innings as freshman. David Hunter and Nicholas Heyer should see time both as pitchers and positional players, both can really swing the bat. Michael Pierro is the lone outfielder in the group, how much he hits will dictate time as he makes his way through his freshman campaign. Michael Ryan, Daniel Baker, Matt Collins and Jack Dunklee are all very good players. The coaches did a real good job getting all these guys, as they can all play immediately. Peyton Goodrich is a strong right-handed hitting first baseman, really like the bat. Great class in my opinion.

Southern New Hampshire

Overview: Southern New Hampshire has had a good run the last couple of years and this 2018 class is formidable as they try to maintain a winning program each year. They bring 3 right-handed pitchers and 1 left-handed pitcher. They add 3 outfielders and right-handed banger at first base as well as a catcher. Bryan Govostes is the right-handed banger out of Woburn. He has an easy setup, stays in his swing and has power potential at the plate. Should be a good offensive player. Alex Kennedy is a big left-handed hitting catcher. Should step right in and compete for playing time.

On the mound, Nick Assad is a quick arm right-hander out of Medway, Massachusetts. The arm and frame project very well to be a high velocity arm. Sean Casey is a left-handed hitting outfielder who moves well and will provide depth.

Stonehill

Overview: Coach Boen brings in another stellar class to Stonehill to reboot the roster. His staff and himself sign 3 infielders, 1 outfielder, 1 catcher and an arm to fill holes that will be left by graduation. Noah Lucier is an athletic right-handed hitting middle guy who can pick it and throw it with the best of him. Aidan Wilde, probably plays 3rd or 1st, but the bat is legit. He should be able to make an immediate impact with the barrel. Ryan Abel is another versatile infielder who will provide depth to the infield. Outfielder Matt Smith is an excellent sign for them, as he can move around positionally as well. The bat is very good and he seems to like to hit with the game on the line. Matt Donlan adds depth to the catching position as he is a big and physical catcher who can really throw. Carson Mendoza is a projectable 6-foot-2, 175-pound right-hander who should garner innings right away. Very good signing class.
